There's a scene in the movie American Splendor where Harvey has cancer and he is questioning whether his character in the comic would live on after he dies. He falls over and hits his head on the radiator and the movie fades into a scene where Harvey talks to the camera kind of like in a dream.
Harvey talks about finding another Harvey Pekar in the phone book and then finds yet another Harvey Pekar in the phone book. Later he reads the obituary in the new paper and learns that the Harvey in the phone book had died and then soon after Harvey Pekar junior from the phone book had also died.
Harvey desribes feeling a sense of great sadness. Even though he had never met these other Harvey Pekar's he felt their lives were all connected in an obscure way. Later he finds yet another Harvey Pekar in the phone book and then the scene fades out with the question "Who are these people, where do they come from?"
I have often wondered myself what might have been. I have wondered if there was someone else just like me who did all the things I might have done but didn't do. I wish I knew how these people all turned out.
