Chapter: 1 The Meeting (Kirk)

Disclaimer: Not real; not even close to the star trek series. I’ve taken complete artistic freedom on this.
Summary: James T. Kirk is a young Starship Capitan; fresh from the academy and his first big adventure with the Enterprise and his crew. It’s a very simple mission; survey the planet to see if it is worth stepping in and changing to be part of the Federation. But when an unexpected guest is beamed up, Kirk is going to have to change the way he thinks and the way he acts.
A/N: I was told to continue this. So I did. This is my baby, and I’m very proud of it. I think I’m the first to tap into the Jonas Brother/Star Trek-vers. Please read and tell me what you think.
Soukara is a very primitive planet. It’s a lot like Earth in the surface and species that inhabit it, and the customs of the natives are very familiar. The landscape is very much like Earth was in the early 1700’s. There are gravel roads and roads made of large stones but for the most part the land is green and fertile with seas and lakes and other bodies of water littering the surface. And, much like the people of Earth during that time, the natives have discovered slavery. The only difference, they don’t enslave their own. This is the exact reason that the Federation has stepped up. More and more Federation protected planets were reporting missing people.
So they sent a peaceful starship to the outer rims of Soukara to survey the planet and see what exactly was going on. Being a peaceful Federation, they weren’t willing to do anything without full knowledge of what they were fighting and what they were fighting for. The ship chosen to do the job was none other than the Enterprise. The Federation was anxious to get their newest starship Capitan some real life experiences in other situations other than what he had already gone through. And they wanted to use their newest first officer to give his Vulcan opinion on the situation as well.

James T. Kirk doesn’t mind when Spock gives the go ahead on something as small and stupid as allowing a passenger from a planet to join them on their ship. It doesn’t bother him in the least, because they have plenty of space on the ship and it’s not an inconvenience or anything. But this time, he’s gone too far. They were only supposed to be surveying Soukara. They had strict orders not to interfere or do anything to alert the occupants to their presence. So this little call, telling him to rush to sickbay, wasn’t exactly something he was jumping for joy about.
As he walked into the room he spotted the newest member of his ship instantly; a mop of curly brown hair sitting on his head. Dirt covered on his clear skin and a large cut splitting his bottom lip almost completely in half. Kirk shook his head, looking away from the kid and walking over to Spock. “Mr. Spock, what’s going on?” He asked his voice firm and threatening. Spock’s face didn’t change, his emotionless features looking at the captain for only a second before he answered. “This boy was running from a pack of vicious looking animals. We thought it only appropriate that we teleport him on board. The moment he was aboard he passed out.”
McCoy came over, shaking his head at the scanner. “He has three broken ribs and he’s dehydrated. It looks like he hasn’t eaten in days.” He said looking at the two officers. “I’m going to need to keep him here for at least a week.” He sighed, turning and walking back to the kid. Kirk suppressed an aggravated huff and gave a short nod to Spock and walked back to his quarters to fill out the necessary reports.
Kirk was still a young Captain, he didn’t have as much on-ship training as most Capitan’s, but he had proved himself to be responsible and worthy of the position. But when Spock goes and does something like this-ugh! He knows that the kid was being chased, and he would probably be dead right now if it weren’t for Spock beaming him up here, but it just wasn’t his place. Kirk is the captain; he’s going to be the one chewed out about the kid. He’s going to be the one who has to explain this to the Federation.

It had been a little over a week when the boy finally woke up. McCoy was able to repair his ribs, and get him hydrated and fed while he was unconscious so he was at least gaining his strength back. It was a few days later that the boy was strong enough to actually start talking and eating on his own though, and he seemed really happy about that. He didn’t seem to like being hooked up to machines and being helped while doing simple things, like eating. McCoy was the one who was watching after him though, and as a doctor, he wasn’t going to let him do anything he wasn’t ready for. However, the boy’s strength came back quickly and it wasn’t long until Kirk was coming down to sickbay to give the okay on getting the kid a real place to stay. The Federation had told him that he was supposed to make the kid as comfortable as possible.
“What do you require?” Kirk asked a few minutes into the conversation. He wasn’t going to fight this. The kid was here, and the Federation had made it perfectly clear, that putting the boy back would alert the natives that something was going on. So he had to keep him here until the survey was complete. And in the mean time he was going to give him whatever he wanted so that when they did put him back down there, he could at least say that they were harmless and meant them no harm. But what the Capitan didn’t know was that Nick only ever spoke to his brothers on the planet. It wasn’t even their home planet, they had been brought there by the slave trade and escaped and now lived in the trees all together.
“Require?” Nick asked confused. He had never been asked that before. He didn’t require anything. When he was a slave, the only thing he was allowed was a drink of water every few hours and this horrible mushroom type plant for food, three times a day to keep up his strength. There were no beds in the rooms, no windows, heat, air conditioning, light, anything. So when the Capitan offered him requests-that’s just weird. “I don’t require anything, sir.” He said simply.
Kirk responded annoyed. He wasn’t in the mood for humbleness. He just wanted to make the kid as comfortable as possible and then send him on his way as soon as he could, but before he could say another word, McCoy jumped in and spoke. “He’s going to need a temperature of at least 56 degrees, plenty of water and access to the computer.” Kirk nodded shortly and walked away to go back to the bridge. McCoy would take care of the room and that would be that. He wouldn’t have to deal with this kid again and thank god for that, because he didn’t really like the kid. He seemed a little too innocent for Kirks taste.

The survey was taking a little longer than anticipated, and Kirk was starting to get a little antsy. Normally they would be off exploring a new world, meeting new creatures and dancing on the edge of danger. But no-here they were on the outer rims of this jungle, slave planet doing absolutely nothing. Spock kept telling him that it would be just a little bit longer and he appreciated the comforting words, but he knew it wasn’t true. He knew that they were stuck here until they could scope out every single creature and the number of people on the surface.
He was sitting in the survey room, watching as their cameras picked up every single sight on the surface, just watching the trees and rivers pass by. The planet was very similar to Earth and it was quite comforting to be somewhere that reminded him of home. Kirk was shaken from his thoughts as the door slid open. He figured that it was Spock coming to check on him, so he yawned, stretching up and spoke out freely, “I think we need to head back to the Federation before we go on our next assignment. Just to touch base and let people-“He cut himself off when he turned his chair around and realized that it wasn’t Spock. It was the kid. “Oh.” He said.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t realize that anyone was in here.” He said, blushing furiously and turning to walk away. Great, now Kirk felt kind of guilty. “No no, it’s fine. You can stay if you want.” He said pointing to the second chair in the room. He watched as the kid fought with himself, about what, he didn’t know. But eventually the kid came and sat down. His body language was stiff and awkward and the room was silent and uncomfortable. “So-how do you like your quarters?” Kirk asked, trying to break the ice a little bit. The kid made an awkward movement and nodded shortly, his curls flying wildly even with just the small movement. He needed a haircut for sure.
“It’s suiting your needs alright?” He said, trying to keep the conversation going. The kid looked at him with his big brown eyes. Thank god. He was actually going to say something. “What needs?” The question wasn’t sarcastic, or angry, it was honest and Kirk was taken aback slightly at how the kid really didn’t seem to think that he needed anything. “You know, is it warm enough? Is the bed soft enough? Is the computer working for you?” Kirk watched as the kid processed his questions. He really didn’t seem to understand.
“I-yeah, it’s suiting my needs.” He said slowly. And the silence set back in. Kirk didn’t fight it this time; instead he just let his mind wander back to Earth as he watched the surface of the planet. He wasn’t sure how much time had actually passed before the kid spoke up again. “What’s your name?” Kirk chuckled slightly. Maybe he should have introduced himself when he first met the kid. Maybe he should have asked his name as well. Any normal Capitan would have. “James T. Kirk. And yours?” He said holding out his hand. The kid looked at his hand confused, darting his eyes from his hand to his face. “Uhm…it’s Nick.” He said, still looking at his hand like he was a crazy person.
Kirk laughed a little breathy, embarrassed that he was waiting for an alien boy to perform an Earth custom. He remembers a professor telling him that doing that was not a good idea. The way to get another species to cooperate was to perform their customs. But Kirk hadn’t really cared to look up anything about this culture. So he just put his hand down and smiled softly. “It’s nice to meet you, Nick.” The silence fell back, but it wasn’t awkward this time. It was just kind of nice, calm having Nick there with him.
Kirk looked up at the time and sighed, standing up. “I’ve got to head to the bridge, are you staying here?” He asked Nick, as he walked to the door. He actually had expected him to stay there. He seemed to be looking at the surface longingly, but he stood up quickly and lit up. “Am I allowed to go to the bridge too?” Kirk really should have told him no. There was no need for a kid to be on the bridge, but they were just surveying the planet. There were no negotiations, no combat or anything, and he figured maybe Nick would like seeing the bridge.
There wasn’t anything really going on, just a few minor things, dodging outgoing and ingoing ships, trying to stay out of sight of the people on the surface. Nick got a little overly excited when they had to fly around the planet, go through an asteroid field and then finally had to go into hyper drive to get away from a ship that seemed to have been following them. Kirk was sitting in his chair, looking at Spock like they were having a secret meeting, when he finally said that they would have to track the ship and see if they had seen anything or if they pushed it off as nothing. Nick was bouncing slightly, beaming as they found the ship again and tapped into their ship system to hear what was being said. I large sigh of relief came over the ship when they pilot finally said “I think it was just an asteroid.”
That was the most action that they had seen in a few weeks and Nick was just so excited that it made everyone on the bridge kind of happy. He kept hopping from officer to officer, asking them what their job was and how they learned how to do that and what would happen if you hit that button. His boyish attitude and excitement had everyone working extra hard at their job and they didn’t have another close call for the rest of the day.
McCoy came onto the bridge a few hours after the ship incident, looking for Nick. Nick looked at Kirk with sad puppy eyes, and - wow, Kirk wasn’t used to having a look from someone make his stomach flip. He had a slight urge to go and wrap him up and never make him do anything he didn’t want to do again. But McCoy stepped in front of Nick and gave him a stern look. “We have to make sure your vitals are stable.” Nick gave a short sigh and nodded, giving a last soft smile to Kirk and thanking Aurora for teaching him a little bit of Romulus before leaving with McCoy to go to sickbay.
The day flies by after that, people working extra hard and Kirk in a good mood, even though they’re not doing anything. It’s just a quick moving day and when it’s time for Kirk to get something to eat, he thinks that maybe he should head down to sickbay to see if McCoy and Nick want to join. When he actually gets down to sickbay though, Nick isn’t there. McCoy says that he needed rest so he sent him to his quarters a few hours ago. It’s kind of unsettling that Kirk wants to go and see if he’s up for grabbing some food. It’s been almost a month since Nick came on board and today was the first day that Kirk had given him a second thought. And now he was all upset because he couldn’t eat with him? That was stupid. He pushed it off though; maybe it was just him missing the energy of a child on board. He invited McCoy for dinner and, after he was done checking his other patients, he agreed and they both headed down to the mess hall.
As they’re both eating and talking about certain stories from the day, Capitan Kirk thinks that maybe having Nick on board won’t be such a bad thing after all.
