My dad used to wake me up for school, and it was not an easy job. He figured out early on that just asking, "Are you up yet?" wasn't enough to confirm that I wasn't sleeping, so he started to quiz me on math problems and vocabulary words.
I adopted this practice, but less creatively. My go-to question to confirm that someone is in fact conscious is, "What's the capital of Missouri?"
I've learned from my relationship with Collin that this test doesn't work on people who are from St. Louis. (I've also learned that people from MO call St. Louis "STL" and Jefferson City "Jeff City.")
I learned tonight that the test DOES work on unconscious Sean, even though before tonight he's never heard of Jefferson City. When I said, "What's the capitol of Missouri?" he said, "Madison, Wisconsin." That is not the response of an awake person.
Hopefully Sleepy Sean is not driving his car into a tree as I write this.
