I'm not in a mood for a long post on this, but word is spreading that Marty Greenberg -- that's Martin H. Greenberg -- has lost his long fight with cancer today. I'm very saddened. Marty was a good friend to many writers, and I count myself among them. I sold quite a lot of stories to Marty and his Tekno Books team, including some of my very best work, stories like "The Children's Crusade," a nebula nominee, and others like "The Terminal Solution" and "Keepers of Earth." During my cancer adventure in 1999 and 2000, Marty kept me busy writing short stories when I couldn't focus on novels. My career, such as it is, might have been down the tubes if not for him.
I have a number of stories about working with Marty. Can't say that I feel like going into depth about them right now. Once, a story I'd written for one of his anthologies accidentally got dropped from the finished product. Nobody noticed until twenty contributors copies showed up on the doorstep and Diana couldn't find the story. Marty apologized profusely and made it all very good. Another time early in my career while sitting at a bar at a worldcon, I mentioned Gnome Press and the "other" Martin Greenberg. Marty grinned and quietly gave me an education.
For the first time in quite a while, I have no stories in the pipeline with Tekno anthologies. I hope the company continues, and I certainly extend my sympathies to his wife and family and to the Tekno Book staff.
Rest in peace, Marty.
