Korad: And We Have Our Cities

Dec 07, 2010 09:20

Here are our final cities, as defined by you:

Cataracts
Residents of Cataracts, the city of bridges, use sign language, as the roar of the falls is so loud. It is built around a large mystical well, from which gushes the water that feeds both rivers. The well predates the city. Behind the great waterfall lies the Secret City.

Well 15%
Sign language 15%

Rustaxle
This city takes its name from the ancient engine that marks the headland; a huge chain runs from it into the bay. It is Famous for creating musical instruments of exquisite tone & timbre; the secrets of crafting such are jealously guarded. Daring pearl-divers satisfy the city's craving for pearls and fermented kraken jerky.

Engine 39%
Instruments 20%
Pearl-divers 12%

Snowmelt
Snowmelt has been overtaken by barbarians but the university's undead militia is fighting back. It is infamous for its dependence on slave labour for the mines. The area surrounding this city is the world's only source of firestones.

Undead militia 27%
Slave labor 15%
Firestones 15%

Shafton
Built by miners using the skills they knew, Shafton is mostly underground. The mines and refineries make this the filthiest and most polluted city in the empire. Here a woman may have several husbands, but a man can only have one wife. The Disappearing Quarter of town (near the docks) is only intermittently there.

Disappearing Quarter 26%
Several husbands 24%
Underground 12%
Pollution 12%

A tie for third place led to the acceptance of four ideas for Shafton.

Craterglass
A meteor created a crater of glass. The city exists in reflection within. The river from Galeharrow flows through caverns underneath the city and is the source of the city's water. The oldest living being in Korad resides here, the last of an otherwise unknown race.

Oldest being 30%
Crater of glass 21%
Water source 10%

The next step: to choose the capital of our empire. After checking out the master city list in the Korad bible over on Scribd, pick the one you think would make the best candidate. I’ll then pick the five cities that seem to have garnered the largest groundswells, based both on strength of argument and on number of commenting supporters. Commenters are, naturally, permitted to argue against proposals to which they object.

As judge, I will exercise biases against cities established as small, deserted, or otherwise under cataclysmic stress or invasion. Cities ruled by oddball governments, and that therefore seem more like independent city-states than part of the empire, will also require heavy lifting by their partisans. A positive tilt may be made toward cities of the bonelands interior river region, which we have already decreed to be our most populous region.

Through this winnowing process we’ll arrive at the cities to put up to a final vote as we choose our capital. This should give you the chance for freewheeling discussion that the strictures of the city-definition process have for the last while suppressed.
