Pick One, People

On Saturday I found myself walking up Yonge Street as the first annual Veggie Pride Parade went down it. It was a modest but cheerful affair with floats, bands, and marchers. There were banners and placards, mostly on the theme that animals have feelings just like ours and should be friends, not food.

Certain of the of the marchers wore mascot-style costumes, dressing up like cows, chickens and pigs to show that animals are adorable and we shouldn’t eat them.

Others wore mascot-style costumes, dressing up like carrots and cobs of corn to show that vegetables are adorable and we should eat them.

cognitive dissonance, prose snapshots, cultural detail, food
