This looks really good.

Here the suspense comes not from the question of whether the hero will win his fights, but how dire the consequences of victory will be.

Now that is interesting. It's an approach I like for a story involving a super-fighter.

wing chun strikes me as a far from easy style to build films around. Intriguing.

This is a really good review. Spot on. I also enjoyed Donnie Yen's portrayal of Ip Man. Considering what we know about the wing chun master's life (his flight from China to Hong Kong, drug addiction, as well as his prowess as a teacher and kung fu master), I thought he was an inspired choice.

Hi, I'm rdansky's wife. *waves*

Ip Man is easily the best straight martial arts movie in a long time.

Better than Redbelt?

I have so far failed to see that.

It seems to be a boxing picture about MMA rather than a martial arts movie in the sense that Fist Of Legend, Drunken Master or District 13 are martial arts movies. If you know what I mean.

Interesting. The organisation within which I learn qigong also has Wing Chun as part of the syllabus, though our local class doesn't teach it, and the lineage is via Ip Man. Don't know how much reality is in the film though!

Expect homage, not history.
