Stupidity Filter

Oct 17, 2007 09:20

One of the great pleasures of doing this blog is that it is blessed with an exceptionally literate bunch of commenters. As such it affords a splendid haven from the typed mouth-breatherism that prevails in so many other corners of the Internet, from forums to social networking sites.

Now relief may soon be at hand even in cyberspace’s most turgid backwaters. A project in development called The StupidFilter aims to use Bayesian techniques to spot stupid responses and whisk them away to an electronic netherworld, before they have a chance to burn your metaphorical retinas.

Will this be a tool powerful enough to tame even such godforsaken sloughs of despond as the IMDB message boards? It may have to filter those out in its entirety.

I don’t know whether it will become anything other than vaporware, or even if it’s for serious, but by golly, I wish them all the best.

And, yes, I realize the obvious joke here is to immediately post a comment that reads:

Frist post :) LOL!!

I have hereby beat you to it, and all of its possible variations, so that none of you will embarrass yourselves by doing it now. We all know you’re above that.
