This week I earned the temporary nickname of Robin when a two year old who hadn’t met me yet gave me the name while I was asleep. She was waiting to meet Rob’n’Lisa, and since she had just met Lisa, Robin must be the one who was still asleep.
This week in Boulder Colorado I stepped in as a Spanish translator at the Saturday market, thinking that I was going to help an American buy some Huichol art from the Mexican vendor. Instead I was asked to tell the vendor that the things he was selling didn’t belong to him, that he was messing with stuff that belonged to a girl who didn’t seem to be around, and that he was a homeless person who had just come out of the park to steal things. Of course in Spanish the vendor was a good deal more eloquent and persuasive than the aggressive American and his friends, so my translation served to head off further unpleasantness.
This week I was asked to give myself a wizardly nickname for the credits of a game that will be published early next year. Robin was available, but not right, so I settled on Rob “Orb Bro” Heinsoo, which sounds better if you pronounce my last name correctly, rhymes with rainbow and Ain’t So.
This week we watched Devotchka play the Halloween show in the Boulder Theater. Their horn-and-theramin gypsy punk transitioned seamlessly into Halloween. If you get the chance to see Devotchka in concert, take it, they’re excellent even without the vampire and gypsy aerialists.
