Well, my goodness.

I couple of days ago, I got some spammy thing from Classmates.com, and I thought, well, might as well check over at their site, where I've signed up, and have yet to have it help me find anyone I was the least bit curious about. (Facebook and LinkedIn have been much better in that regard, especially when it came to my college buddies).

At the bottom of their login page, it had some kind of "find your high school" thing, and it had an "Other countries" button, which piqued my interest, since Classmates has only ever had US and overseas military schools listed. So, I punch in Ireland, and then Galway, and under "S" the very first school to pop up was the one I went to - Salerno Secondary School, and when I clicked on that, one of only two people listed was my very best friend from high school, who I haven't heard from since, oh, 1983.

It was about then that I realized I had left the Classmates.com site for one of their sister (parent?) sites, "The Names Database". And I would have to pay them $12 to send my friend an email. Grrr. I never give networking sites money (no, not even this one - I have an old, grandfathered-in, free, no-ads account). But, they had me. I gave them my money.

And my friend wrote back!

I'm very excited about this, though also nervous. It's a bit awkward, because I'm the one who totally dropped the ball, and moved 6 times without leaving decent forwarding addresses, and then kind of freaked out when I only had an out-of-date address for her, and gave up.

Anyway, it nice to see the promise of the Internet fulfilled in some tiny way!
