A Post? A Post!

A post? No!

So I just got this newsletter from my friend, and in it a good number of people from my high school graduating class wrote in to tell what they’re doing with their lives. And they were all different, but on the basic level, there were two general forms. Here’s the first:

“I’m finishing my major in philosophy. It’s fun. I drink a lot. My favorite activity is going out to the bars with my friends, too. It’s fun. Whenever I graduate, I’m going to get a job in Pittsburgh, and live with my boyfriend. It’ll be fun. I might be pregnant, too. It’s fun.”

Then, there’s the second type:

“Well, I’m graduating early from the University of Pittsburgh with majors in psychology, elementary education, German, French, and mechanical engineering, as well as minors in studio art, chemical engineering, and women’s studies. Last summer, I traveled to Ghana to personally feed and knit shirts for starving, AIDS-infected orphans. It was an amazing experience. Next summer, I might go back, to help build an orphanage and dig a deep well with my bare hands to irrigate an entire region. I am currently applying for real jobs, and have had some interest from NASA, who wants me to be the first woman on Mars. I’m not sure if I’ll take it, for the President is looking for a new Secretary of State and I think this position might benefit me more in the long run. In my free time, I like to play tennis, squash, flag football, baseball, and I also ski, snowboard, hike, read ancient Greek philosophy, write novels, and play with my prize-winning dogs. Oh, I’m also engaged to a male underwear model. Hope everything is well with you guys!”

The surprising this is, there’s a lot more of the latter than the former. And the latter is people you thought would be like that when you grew up, but also the slackers. Like, the kids that never tried in high school are now saving the world. And what am I doing?

“Hey, everyone. I’m graduating in April with a degree in aerospace engineering. I think I’ll go to grad school, too. But I don’t know where. This past summer I worked for the Air Force in the middle of Ohio. In my free time, I like to do homework and sit on the couch watching college football. I’m also on the Human Powered Submarine Team, but I don’t really do much other than sign the checks. I also have a girlfriend, too. But we’re not engaged or living together or anything.”

Is my life really this boring, or does it just seem this way? I feel that I should be doing something monumental to change the world. In fact, I think I will. I need to improve the world. Change things! Make a difference! I’m going to go out right now and do that!

. . . as soon as the Mizzou-Kansas football game is over.
