I've mentioned this article to some of you already, but I'm sitting here bored, so I will key it in here. It's an article from my hometown newspaper The Butler County Banner. The article is titled "Hispanic community draws fire at council meeting--Council hears complaints alleging Hispanic disturbances and discusses cable television issues" Written by Josh Hampton of the Banner-Republican in the October 20, 2004, edition.
The Hispanic community of Morgantown was again under fire at last Monday's city council meeting as concerned Dave Gaskey Lane resident, Susan Middleton, returned to this month's meeting to give an update on what she referred to as a 'problem' with her Hispanic neighbors.
Middleton appeared at last month's meeting of the city council and reported that an estimated 25 - 30 Hispanics were living in a two bedroom house that neighbors her property. She also stated that several of those neighbors had been video taping neighborhood children, slaughtering goats and chickens and even cited an incident where they attempted to lure her granddaughter into their yard.
On Monday, Middleton stated that nearly half of the Hispanics had moved to another house down the street, but says she is still experiencing problems.
"My neighbors and I are scared to walk to Save-A-Lot or even to the park," said Middleton. "I'm even afraid to have people over for supper, because if (my friend) is nice looking then (my neighbors) will be staring. I don't stare at them. I don't take pictures of them."
Councilman Roger Gaskey stated that he had visited the area and said he had seen them using a video camera.
Middleton continued by saying that she along with several other Dave Gaskey Lane residents 'want the city to do something about this problem and clean up the street'.
One instance, Middleton described, was where a group of Hispanics attempted "to coax a nine-year-old disabled girl into a van, but luckily, she said, someone was there to stop them.
In her opinion, she said, the Hispanics should be required to learn basic English and be more educated in American culture if they plan to live in the United States.
"If you go to Mexico you'll see them selling their little brothers and sisters on the street for money, but we don't do that here. It is not our culture to play with little girls," she said.
Mayor Charles Black suggested the possibility of applying for a grant to hire a Spanish teacher to help with their apparent lack of communication.
"I think it would be easier to teach them English than it would be to teach police officers to speak Spanish. They have already learned the one they're speaking. If they're gonna' live here they need to kill the excuse of 'No Comprehendo," said Black. "The city has no authority to tell them how many people can live in one house, but we will see if we can't get them domesticaetd into our way of life."
Black concluded the discussion by reiterating earlier statements, saying that he strongly feels that it is the Hispanics responsibility to learn the English language if they plan to continue living in Morgantown.
"We can't bar them completely, because that's illegal and usually everything I like to do is illegal," he added. "It needs to be taken care of before it gets worse," added Black.
The article then continues to the issue of poor customer service from the company that provides Morgantown with it's cable access. I can enter that as well if enough of you are interested. My cousin lives behind the house o' mexicans, and she has never seen any goats or chickens slaughtered or ever felt afraid walking outside. She said that there were maybe 15 people living in the house, maybe. Also, this Middleton lady and one other person are the people complaining and the other person is one of the top crystal meth dealers in the town, and this lady has about 15 cars in her yard. Good times.
This is where I'm from. It's gotten much worse in the few years I've been gone, I was astonished.
