Ow, I'm fat. I ate lots of burrito.
Got some time to kill?
Well, here's that NYC update I promised you.
Day 1 (12/29): Got in line for a taxi at JFK. Got hustled out of line by a town car driver. He charged us the same price for no wait and a scenic drive (he wanted to show us the skyline). His name was Nicholas, and when he found out I was studying music, he got all excited and told me about the bebop days in Philly and New York. Apparently he knew Miles Davis in the early sixties and lived in the same building as Cannonball Adderly for some time. He worked as a bouncer at bebop clubs in the late sixties. We got to our hotel and then went out and got sushi / pizza and then went to our hotel.
Day 2 (12/30): My sister and her crew went and did tourist shit (tried to see Statue of Liberty &c.). I went to meet JessAnn at Columbus Circle near Central Park. Her and I went to meet up with her boyfriend in Chinatown at the art gallery where he worked. The gallery (the artist's only one in the world) was filled with designer lighting by
Ingo Maurer, and it was all pretty fucking awesome. Then we went to a bar down the street and drank
beers and watched people play pool. Met up with my sister in Little Italy for some Malaysian food and she succeeded in eating with chopsticks. We split up again and I went to JessAnn's house in Harlem, watched Willy Wonka, drank Dos Equis, and then went to the sleep.
Day 3 (12/31): Woke up quick at about noon. Went downtown Harlem and ate at this smoothie shop. I think everything in Harlem costs 3 bucks so I got a veggie burger and a fresh fruit smoothie for six bucks. I ate it (de-lish) and argued with my sister on the phone.
JessAnn wanted to go hang out with her boyfriend for the night, so I took the subway down to Union Square to meet my sister & her crew. We walked around looking for food. Some cracked out man said "I know you and you know me too so shut up!." Then we found Molly Wee Pub on 8th Ave at 30th. All the hired help was Irish. So we did the PC thing and got some Car Bombs (they called them Belfast Car Bombs in this joint). We met some folks from New Zealand: this woman named Lucy decided she'd scoot their table up to ours and we all hit it off. She asked, "I want a Manhattan. What's in a Manhattan?" and I said "I think it's Whisky and Vermouth" and she made a 'that's gross' face. Then she ordered one and didn't like it very much.
Later we decided to find another bar and found ourselves approaching Times Square. Got a shot each (tequila, myself) and proceeded to scheme our way into a good view. We had our hotel keys to show to cops to get us really close to Times Square, and after arguing our way to the front door of the Sheraton Manhattan, I slipped into a slight opening in the fence on the street and through the huge-ass crowd. We drunk-dialed a gang of people and then counted along really loud with a few million people while this sparkly little ball was slowly lowered. Then we walked up 15 flights of stairs to our room, got pretty, and tried to go out. But we were in the wrong neighborhood, apparently. So we walked around for an hour and a half and then went back to the hotel.
Day 4 (1/1): My sister spent the day at Macy's. As for me, I walked west until I made it to the water. I sat for a bit and then walked back to go get a beer at Molly Wee Pub. Went back to Macy's after a bit and got a little bit of clothing. Was supposed to meet up with JessAnn for dinner, but it failed cause Macy's swallowed all cell-phone reception and my sister and her crew were also eaten by Macy's. Ate food at tgifridays which sucked and cost too much money (20+ dollar plates at that kitsched-out piece of shit chain restaurant). Beth, Tiki and I went to Molly Wee again but it was empty so we went to Blarney Stone a few doors down. I got hit on by a New Yorker. She liked Seattle and was drunk and excited to meet me. I drank some Smithwick's and some Stella. We went to White Castle. Their burgers are tiny but their milkshakes are huge. Then we went to the hotel and I hung out and watched the room twirl.
Day 5 (1/2): Met up with JessAnn one more time and ate food. I'm tired of typing.
The end.
