One of my friends in Taiwan is a theater director.  It has been several years since we last caught up, but I remember when he invited me to Tainan to watch his latest play be performed.

His show was a 'play within a play' with the basic story line showing people acting out Romeo and Juliet except that the audience was viewing it from backstage instead.  The play was actually a comedy that tried to show exactly how dangerous acting can be!

The main story took place between the 'actors' in Romeo and Juliet where one of the actors was plotting to kill Romeo by creating an accident during the play.

For example, during the balcony scene the killer tries to make the balcony fall on Romeo or when he goes to drink the 'poison' he tries to replace it with actual poison.

Anyway, it was interesting to me because it was the first play I had ever watched performed in Mandarin.  It was fun to meet some of the actors after the show and it was great seeing how far his career had developed.  He used to study abroad at the same university as myself and at the time he was given a small role for a college theater production.  I think he only had one line.  But his plays have been performed internationally now.
