Quick G1 Review and Rally Update

The targe full QWERTY keyboard which was a main selling point for me is great, but I wish the keys were raised just a hair more. It took a couple of hours, but I'm getting proficient with it almost as good as I was with my Sidekick.

The google search widget is awesome for doing quick searches on the fly. The 3G is spotty in my area right now. It keeps switching from 3G to Edge all the time. But since it supports WiFi it really hasn't bothered me that much other than the WiFi being a battery eater. But on the plus side of that is that charges really fast and despite the weird proprietary looking USB port a standard USB Mini-B plug works just fine making any workstation potential battery charger.

The google maps/traffic/street view is awesome and the compass mode with street view is a cool feature using the phone's accelerometer to glance around. The GPS is cool but nothing to make me replace my Garmin Nuvi or even GPS-V. Not a lot of apps right now, but I did install The Weather Channel app which is pretty cool and includes watching the The Weather Channel for what ever area you pick. The SMS is nice and organized and displays them almost in a chat like format.

The phone is seen as a removable drive making it easy to transfer images and music. The 3 megapix camera takes a nice clear image but it takes a while for it to take a photo from the time you press the trigger from the time it actually takes the picture.

The only con that I have with it so far is that it's failing to notify when I have new email even though I have it it set to do so. It's also not deleting email from my server like I asked it to. The Gmail client on the other hand works awesome. heh I hope someone builds a new email client for it soon.

The chat clients (Yahoo, AIM, etc.) won't reconnect once a connection is lost. So that's two strikes against this phone. That's what the Sidekick does better, email and chat clients.

I bought my first album on the phone through Amazon and double points for it being DRM free music. I bought Electric Six's new album Flashy. It's okay. My favorite songs on there are Formula 409, Gay Bar Part Two, and Your Heat is Rising.

In other news things are coming together for the Scoot & Spook scooter rally next weekend. Friday we had a meeting in Tomball to see what we lacked. Saturday we rode to Conroe to scope out the campgrounds and ride paths. Beautiful backroads in Sam Houston National Forest. We then checked out a biker bar out there as a stop for one of our rides. The Harley people looked at us funny as we parked our scoots next to their bikes. Irish was wearing his kilt, so there was that extra WTF factor. haha Sunday we all rode to Sam's Club to price out all the meals for the rally. We're expecting about 75 people. I'll be taking some gear up there Wednesday night to start setting up and I'll ride back to Tomball on Thursday to help out with the volunteers meeting.

I've already chopped off the exhaust on the Vino and I'll rejet it this Tuesday. Maybe I can get this thing to see 75 mph. heh

I still ride the motorcycle a couple of times a week just to keep everything fresh.
