I am a Software Engineer for General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT).
I will be developing in Oracle Forms. The GREAT thing about this job is that they advertised that MS Access experience was sufficient, which is obviously was, since they hired me; they will train me in Oracle. This is the perfect job for me, allowing me to use my expertise in Access and take the step up to Oracle through on-the-job training. The biggest problem I had in finding a job over the past two years is that I don't have Oracle experience, and most of the DB jobs in town are Oracle. I now have my foot in the door.
There were typical first-day problems: my computer is a clean slate, so I have to be set up for each program I'm going to be using. Some of the intranet applications I can't use yet because I have not been granted access (something that is out of the hands of our local tech guys). I figure I'm going to be drifting the rest of this week as I wait for various accesses to be granted. Further first-day complications arose in that my manager is out of town on a conference, and my immediate supervisor had to take his 3-year-old daughter to the hospital because her leukemia flared up. My office-mate was delegated the responsibility of getting me started. She has warned me that there is a LOT of information, and told me not to worry if I get overwhelmed. I'm going to be lost for a month at least as I get the hang of acronyms and jargon.
I have to keep reminding myself that I don't live in Eureka, and that my GD is not THAT GD.
