Birthday parties are exhausting

Feb 21, 2006 21:53

Yesterday was my older sister's 50th birthday. However, the party was on Saturday.

About a month ago, my neice caught me during one of my brief and infrequent appearances on Yahoo chat. She had some sex-spam-bot type name, but luckily identified herself before I banned her.
Kim (changed from her real Y! ID): Hi, it's Kim.
robearal (6:28:21 PM): what can your queer slut uncle do for you today?
Kim(6:28:34 PM): hehe,
Kim(6:28:42 PM): ok i am trying to be sneaky,
Kim(6:29:01 PM): i'm planning a hugh party for mom's 50th
robearal (6:29:08 PM): cool!
Kim(6:30:04 PM): I am going to send out invites, but I wanted to send you a message to, just incase our lovely mail service doesn't run right
robearal (6:30:14 PM): lol
Kim(6:31:07 PM): It looks like it is going to be on sat, feb 18, and I am trying to keep it a surprise party
...
Kim(6:34:21 PM): ok rob, I'll let you go back to your slutty ways...

So, I reserved the date in my calendar and told Phil that we would be going to the party.
Last Wednesday I went shopping for a gift. I went to Pier One and World Market and didn't see anything that struck my fancy. I stopped into Williams Sonoma, thinking to get some dipping oils or something of that ilk. They had a display of creme brulee parafernalia. They have a pan and rack that makes the water bath part of cooking the custard easier. The display suggested that the ramekins were part of the set. I mean, how else are you going to make sure the ramekins you use will fit the rack, right? Well, it wasn't until I got the 2 sets (one for my sister and one for me) home that I discovered the ramekins were NOT included. No, the nice 6-oz ramekins were included in the torch set, not with the water bath tray. So the trays will be going back.

Instead, I regifted a tabletop fountain that we got for xmas 2 years ago that we never opened up. I also got her a pretty-princess birthday card for a 5 year old and wrote in the zero with a sharpie.

We left here around 2:30 (CST) on Saturday afternoon. Around 3:30 we spent about a half hour getting gas and food. I was afraid we were going to be late. We had to be at my sister's house by 7:30 (EST), according to the plans. Well, the rest of the trip was uneventful. Through Atlanta, then on up 85 to the Winder exit. Then another half hour on back roads to the house. The cul-de-sac had cars parked all around it. Gee, this is going to be a surprise. We went inside and were surrounded by a horde of people. I first spotted my sister's husband's sister. She helped make sense of who all the people were. Most of the people were members of her family, kids in their 20's, who I remember as little kids, now with little kids of their own. People were chowing down on the party food and well into their beers.

Well, my brother in law kept them out at the restaurant about an hour longer than the plan. My sister was nicely surprised, especially when she saw me and Phil. The party went on until about 2:00. Some people started leaving around 11:00. Phil and I inflated our AeroBed in the computer room. The 5-year-old girls were up bright and early, of course. I got up around 10 or so. My sister cooked up a nice hearty breakfast for the crew. We left around 2:00 pm for our 3.5 hour trip back home.
