We had a netflix marathon this weekend.
First on the bill:
Spetters, a Dutch film from 1980 by Paul Verhoeven. It follows the lives of 3 sexy motocross teen boys as they all try to win the affections of a golddigging bitch. Phil put it on the list because one of the yahoo groups he's on lately sent out some stills from the movie showing a rape scene featuring some biker-looking dudes in leather. That scene was actually near the end of the movie. My rating: so-so. It's not a bad film, but it's not all that wonderful, either.
Teenage Space Vampires, a typical B-grade horror movie made in Romania, premier land of B-grade horror movies. The main roles were played by Canadians, with supporting cast played by Romanians being dubbed -- poorly. You can't go into what you know is a low-budget movie expecting Gone With the Wind. If you take it for what it is, it's a pretty good, if predictable, story. Geek boys save the day.
Vertigo. Hitchcock, 1958. I'm such a poser at times. I have the cultural literacy, but I haven't seen some of the great movies that I ought to have. This was a good movie, and deserves the reputation. Who knew that Barbara Bel Geddes, better known to those of my generation as the aged Miss Elly Ewing on Dallas, was such a hot starlet! Who knew that Jimmy Stewart could play such a creepy perv, making one woman dye her hair and force her to wear certain outfits to make her look like someone else. My only question, though, is why the hell does Judy jump? Sure, the nun was spooky coming out of the shadows, but come on. What was the motivation?
