I am sleep deprived and have a general feeling of "bleh," but I think I'll get over it once I eat something.
I'm not used to waking up at the 6:30ish time. It's still kind of dark, the sky is grey and getting lighter and my mom is snoring like a beast. I swear, that snoring could wake the dead . . . if their ears haven't rotted. Fun though hmm?
Anyways, the Aquarium was okay. I was entrusted to put out the crocks of food, and take the pm crocks back into the backup area (where I work anyways). Upon putting the food out the sun conures took a shine to me and landed on the bowls as I was holding them. They're very light, so it was okay, but still. . . a tad startling since they're not supposed to get people-happy. The Lion-faced Tamarinds (cutest dern thing ever!) were in their cage and when I went to say good morning to them one came right up to the cage side near me and was like, "Who the hell are you?? Hmm.. maybe you'll give me something. . . nope. . fine then" And promptly scampered off. I want to PLAY WITH THEM!!! But no, that's not something I can do.
The other highlight (and sad news as well) is that Rapunzel (
see her here) is sick. She's got a urinary tract infection or a reproductive tract infection (they aren't sure which) so she's not out where people can see her. She's 33 years old (her birthday is tomorrow) and she came to the Aquarium when it first opened in 1981. (I had to read that frickin Volunteer book, and Beth told me how old she is today) So the aviculture girls that I work with went in to check on her and said I could come too. . . so I got to pet her!!! I PET A SLOTH!!! She has the prettiest eyes. Poor thing is probably constipated. They should give her metamucil to help with stool softening.
The rest of my day was pretty normal. I'm getting to handle the bugs (waxworms, sm. mealworms and mega mealworms) more and help prepare the PM diet. I do like it there, I only wish that I weren't a volunteer, but a real employee. I DO have a name badge now and an NAiB shirt to wear. yippee. . .skippy. . tra. . la . . la. .
Now to eat.
