Rory/Jess Recs #5

Jun 22, 2014 17:58

Now that my 22 Days Of Literati are done, it's time for a new rec post.

- Get Out Of This Place While We Still Have Time by Missgoalie75 (on Tumblr): She doesn’t know what will be worse to her mom - potentially sleeping with your boyfriend at a party or running off with him to New York City in the middle of the night. This is just amazing! It’s raw, honest and intense. If only it could have been like this.

- To Move With Purpose by Missgoalie75: Rory doesn't say no to Jess and they proceed to spend the summer together, traveling from New York City to Venice Beach on an impromptu road trip. A lovely slow road to reconciliation.

- 50 Sentences by Missgoalie75: A list of 50 themes and each theme is a sentence each. Missgoalie75 gets to the heart of the Literati matter, one sentence at a time.

- Footnotes And Annotations by Missgoalie75: Glimpses of what’s seen and not seen during their times together and apart. 117 drabbles, ranging from happy to sexy to very sad. I'm not done reading all of them (only ten to go), but I wanted to include them in this rec list anyway. My favourites so far: 10, 11, 21, 42!, 46!, 47!, 49, 55, 58!, 59!, 60!, 66, 70!, 71, 75, 76!, 81, 82, 87!, 102, 104, 109!.

This is turning out to be a bit of a fan letter to Missgoalie75. ;) Missgoalie75, I'm almost done reading all of your Lit fic. I'm anxiously awaiting your new stuff!

But let's not forget that there are other great Lit writers out there as well:

- Still Three Shy by Francesca Jones: She started drinking straight from the bottle, because that’s what Jess would’ve done. Hauntingly beautiful, but so sad!

- Our Exile by TrappedInPast: How things should have gone on the bus when Jess left. His face betrays nothing of his emotions, and for once, for once in his whole life, he wishes that it would. Intense, painful and with great symbolism, but ultimately uplifting.

- Tail Lights by Sisyphus: Her thigh is still tingling from where his fingers had briefly brushed it. She knows it shouldn’t, but it’s there the sweep of it over and over again. Rory after she leaves Truncheon. Wonderfully symbolic. It manages to pack a punch in so few words.

- The Getting Back On The Bus Series by Allessandramari, starting with How Did I Get Here?: Set during the 2012 election season, Rory revisits Truncheon to ask Jess for help in getting Luke back on track. Includes a walk down the dark alley of Jess's childhood. A Rory and Jess romance with Luke, Lorelai, the Gilmores and the rest of the town thrown in for fun. This is an entire saga, consisting of twelve stories (so far). A lot of them are Literati-centric, but other characters are featured as well, including Logan, Dean and even Percy, the swan who beaked Jess in 3x14! I've only read the first four stories so far, but they were all excellent. I especially love the treatment of Jess' childhood back story in Getting Back On The Bus (#2).

- Favorite Lie by Starcrossed890: And your stomach twists in a good way, because inside you know that it's a lie. And it's the favorite lie you've ever told. Jess listens in on Rory's discussion with Shane in the beauty shop. Cute!

- Flat Screen Saga by Andra-ggfan: Luke made Lorelai give away her flat screen TV. He came to get it, she came to visit, now they're dating. And now the campaign is finally over and they're moving in together. Exciting times but what comes next? The book fragments at the end of this epos melt my heart.

- Unspoken Words by Andra-ggfan: Rory and Jess and a summer night.'I don't need words, I need you.' Poetic and intense.

- Too Rough, Too Rude, Too Boisterous by Ainerose: What if Dean went to Luke's two minutes earlier, when Lorelai and Rory were outside talking? Can Lorelai fix the mess that was Raincoats and Recipes, in between opening the inn, fighting Jason and kissing Luke? A twist on 4x22, wherein Lorelai makes Rory realise that she's only running back to Dean because her feelings for 'unreliable' Jess scare her and Dean feels like a safe choice, which is exactly how I've always perceived the situation.

- Truths Universally Acknowledged by 12cubed: A set of missing scenes from late Season 2. Rory and Paris get an assignment from Mr. Medina. Great comparisons between Jane Austen's and GG's characters. I never realised it before now, but the end of Persuasion is very applicable to a future reunion between Rory and Jess. It's a shame they seem to dislike Edward Rochester so much though. ;) Love the extra Rory/Jess/Paris discussions!

- Keeping The Web Untangled by Iscahmckrae (on Tumblr): Jess didn't usually lie, at least according to his own definitions, or Rory's. Occasionally, though, certain things needed to be the truth. Chapter Two: "And people wonder why I don't smile more..." The origin of Jess' crooked mouth. Heavy. I love their dynamic as a married couple in the second chapter.

- Three Painful Words by lalalovely.x: You love him. You love him more than you ever thought you could. But all he ever did was hurt you. Please look past the spelling mistakes. This is one intense (I seem to use that word a lot concerning Rory and Jess) piece of fic.

- A Gradual Descent by Knowhere: She refused to be a cliché, falling for the seemingly dangerous guy when she was with the safer one. He refused to let the innocent girl of his friend to make him feel something unwanted. My first foray into AU Lit fic. Very different, but worth reading. Their chemistry is electric, the characters are recognizable and it's incredibly hot. I love Killer the cat!

- Tricky Concept by Knowhere: For once, she didn’t get what she wanted. Despite the fact that it breaks her heart, she wants to be happy for him. So sad.

- I Have Never by Knowhere: A dark kitchen, one bottle…two old lovers reminisce and discover things for the very first time. And its sequel Not What You'd Expect: Awkwardness isn’t a requirement of the morning after. This one isn’t filled with halting pauses and lingering looks. This passage rings so very true: "I never thought you'd say no." Her lip begins to tremble. "Maybe that was my mistake. Maybe I always thought I could come back to you when I was ready."

- Blizzards And Broken Hearts by Lady.Of.Victory.Rising: A Family Matter... with a twist. Because of the snow, Luke doesn't check on the car, and Jess ends up walking back to Stars Hollow... with some unexpected consequences. Very emotional. I love the Rory/Luke bonding and the image of Rory curled up into a sick and sleeping Jess, while playing with his hair.

- Give Me Someday by TheVelvetDusk: An addendum to the devastating ending of Last Weeks Fights, This Weeks Tights. It's been done before, but I'm doing it again. "The ghost of a life she had previously shelved seemed to float obtrusively around her white walled future." It's a shame there are only a couple of Lit fics around written by TheVelvetDusk. I love the way she uses language. This piece has beautiful imagery and provides us with a more rational ending to 4x22.
