Right, so I'm still on hiatus, but I need you all to know that The Muppets is pretty much the most wonderful movie of the year. And here's why you should all see it:
it's an unabashedly charming love letter to the Muppets I grew up with (bless you, Jason Segel, for getting it so right), but it's also a shamelessly glorious, epic musical, the kind that hasn't been seen onscreen in a really long time. There's harmonized singing and choreographed dancing and gorgeous, colorful costumes that swirl together to make a cinematic painting and there is even a little teeth-brushing in tandem. I didn't think anyone could make movies like that anymore, but this movie has proved me wrong.
everyone you know and love is there, along with some new characters that you will fall in love with from first squeak. The voices are a little different and they all seem to be a little older, but underneath all that felt and fur are the same characters you grew up with and loved unconditionally. They still care about each other, they still want to do the right thing, they still have hope and faith in a better world, and they are still terrible at rehearsing, but still manage to pull off a fantastic show at the very last minute.
the songs were written by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords. Yes, the dude who co-wrote the lyric "I'm making a lasagne... for one!" has written some of the sweetest, funniest, most Muppetiest songs you will hear. You cannot hear the music and not smile and feel happy. And there are also the old favorites like the Muppet theme (which the BIL and I sang along to, out loud, in the theater) and The Rainbow Connection, which brought tears to my eyes because I am a total sap. Basically, the entire soundtrack is aural joy, and if you don't believe me, I will totally upload the soundtrack so you can listen for yourself.
it is so funnyyyyyyyyyy! I laughed my ass off for the entire movie, except for the scenes where I cried, and there was the one Benson joke where I was literally the only person in the theater that laughed. Whatever, the jokes were hilarious and clever and corny and great without being mean-spirited or too in-jokey, and I totally laughed at all of Fozzie's jokes. He's still got it.
awesome cameos are awesome. I spent the entire movie playing Spot The Celebrity, which is as much fun to do as it was with the old movies. Some of them came as a delightful surprise, some of them turned out to be surprisingly great, despite me not liking the actual celebrity, and overall, it was just perfect. I am still sad that Gregory Hines isn't still around to run around in little jogging shorts and watch Kermit and Piggy argue, but I was really happy to see the people I saw.
Jason Segel and Amy Adams are the most perfect people ever. I heart them so, so much, I can't even tell you. I owe Segel about a million kisses for writing the Muppets as I remember them, and Amy deserves all the love in the world for being so wonderful and singing so beautifully and giving 150% to be funny and charming and sweet. I kind of wish they were dating in real life so I could blow kisses at them. Seriously, I love them, you guys.
WALDORF AND STATLER. The end.
And to the grinchy critic who was the only one to complain about the Muppets movie and grudgingly gave them faint praise, this song is for you:

I will probably be back soon to force pictures of my new house and my cats onto you, and babble excitedly to you about everything. Probably the Muppets since they're on the brain right now. You've been warned.
In the meantime, I love and miss you all. *mwah*
