In the original series, he was nicknamed Bones after 'sawbones', the old term for doctors. In the movie, Kirk gives him the nickname after he tells Kirk, "The ex-wife got the planet in the divorce. All I've got left are my Bones." And then he passes over his flask of hooch and a friendship is born. :D

Genderswap never really sits well with me because a lot of it isn't convincingly written enough to make me buy into it. I love the theory of it, but the execution never works for me. I love this story because the author makes me believe that Bones couldn't be anyone else but this fantastic, cranky, brilliant woman who is at the top of all her classes, doesn't take shit from anyone, pushes Kirk around while caring for him, and has this vulnerable, tender side that they never really get to explore in the movie because so much stuff is happening.

There's one part where she talks about McCoy's divorce. In the movie, it's rarely mentioned when it's not being played for laughs, but in this story, you get to see how badly the divorce hurt her, and you understand why she ran all the way to Starfleet, despite being terrified of flying.

I love this story so much, it's ridiculous. It gave me everything I ever wanted in a genderswap story with fantastic dialogue, great sex, and banana bags. *pink hearts*
