Just got home from a weekend of messenger related happenings. This weekend was the Westside Invite, which is basically the second (I think) biggest messenger race in the country (I could be wrong about that).
Saturday was the coffeecat, a race that started at downtown stumptown and had 5 more stops along the way. At each stop you had to drink 8oz of coffee. Thanks to Cassandra, we brought ice along to not only drop the temperature from about 200degrees to a nice temperate 180, but the ice also helped to dilute the coffee from a massive gut bomb to a small nuclear explosion level.
The stops for the coffee cat included, dt stumptown, half and half, Mississippi freshpot, stumptown annex, stumptown on division and 3 friends, with the race ending at SE 8th and mill. The second two stumptowns, with their black as fuck french pressed coffee, and later placing in the race made me gag reflex as I tried to pound them down. My friend Donovan and I finished the race in about an hour. He got 7th and I came in 8th place out of about 40 others. I promptly puked about 20 oz of coffee (appx.) upon arriving at the final destination.
Post coffeecat, there was a HUGE party at the 8th and mill house. Pabst donated about 200? racks of beer and there was 5 kegs, 3 bands and a sprint competition. I think I placed about 8th in that too (could be a little off on that though). It was really fucking miserable, weather wise and so I went to fresh pot (no coffee) and then home to use the drier. (pictures of all this to come in another blog)
Today was the big one. All this other shit gots nothin. This was the main race. I was told that about 120 people were in this race at the start. I swear to god that this race was the hardest thing I have ever done, physically, in my 22 years of life. The second time I had to climb Mt. Tabor on my fucking bike I wanted to die. The race was just so mental. After biking about 50 miles in about 2 hours, the last thing you want to do is climb the disaster that is Mt. tabor, with one god damn gear. I could talk about how hard this thing was for about 3 hours. I ended up getting 9th place and I really couldnt be more ecstatic about it. Given the fact that over half the field of racers were messengers, Im pretty surprised at how well I did.
sorry. enough of that ego boosting. We (me and Donovan) think that we covered about 65 miles and that took us 3 hours and 20mintues.all I want to do is sleep.
