Back on RPGs and story games though... I just wrote a game that you might find useful in your ponderings: Happy Birthday, Robot. I tried to write it with the short, simple sentences of a child's early storybook. The games reads a lot like the stories that the game creates. Hopefully that makes it easy to learn and encourages young readers to exercise their new vocabulary and grammar skills in writing.
It also has a pretty recognizable frame of reference in stories about childlike robots exploring a new world. Most recently Wall•E, but also Johnny Five, Astro Boy, Iron Giant, heck even Frankenstein, kinda. So that helps make the scenario a little easier to understand because I don't have to spend a lot of time explaining what "robot," "exploring," or "childlike" really mean.
Fred and Ryan seem to dig it and there's already some really funny actual play posted over here.
