Family History

My cousin Alicia has started a group on FaceBook to gather together our far-flung family on my mother's side. Among the treasures are a bunch of very old family photos, most of which it turns out are coming from my mom!

So now Mom is sending her scans to me too, and the whole thing inspired me to look through the box of family stuff that I've been toting around for years. Turns out there's some neat stuff in there. I've always known about our family's connections to old Hollywood, but it was never something we made a big deal out of. I went through that box with my love the other day and he was really excited about what he saw. I must say it IS pretty cool.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some scans from the family vault for your viewing pleasure:

The Statendam, the ship my mother's father's family (Feige/Fannie & Simon/Sam Fingerman) arrived on, from Rotterdam to New York, on May 29, 1907.  The father, Issuchar/Sucher/Sam, had arrived earlier and then sent for them.  I love the Ellis Island archives! Sorry about all the name changes, hard to keep track, I know. Such was the life of Jews in America. They came originally from Kamenitz, Russia (now Ukraine.)

This is my mother's great-grandmother Sarah Mayer (on the left) and her children - my mother's grandmother, Ida Mayer Cummings is the girl on the right. Her brother, Louis B. Mayer (of MGM), is behind her to her right. I would guesstimate this to be around 1880-1890. Any input on that is greatly appreciated. They came to New Brunswick, Canada, from somewhere in Russia. The children are: Yetta (in back,) Louis, Ida, Gerald and Ruben (Rudolph)

We're not entirely sure, but we think this picture is of my mother's father, Sol Baer Fielding (né Fingerman) and his older sister Esther Fingerman Haines. I know he was born in 1908. He looks about 4 years old here, which fits with the clothing style at around 1912. They are the younger children of Feige & Sucher and siblings of Simon, those who emigrated on the ship above. They were born here in the U.S.

Jacob and Sarah Mayer, I'm guessing around 1915? She is the same Sarah Mayer from the photo with her five children, but later. These are my maternal great-great grandparents.

That's all for now. More later!
