Lucas carefully picked his way through the grove of trees that covered the path to the cape. His expression was calm, but the hands that gripped the bouquet of flowers betrayed his nervousness and embarrassment. The other Trainers on the route had tried to stop him for battles, but when they spied the flowers in hand, they grinned widely and let him pass, much to his chagrin and gratitude.
Dubiously he glanced at the offending flowers in hand. They were roses of a delicate pink color; the only flower he could find that were pink and had a somewhat-relevant flower meaning. He hoped she would like them, but what if she was still mad at him(and Barry)? Come to think of it, he wasn't entirely sure what was going to happen. Clefable, however, bouncing along beside him, seemed unconcerned, a stark contrast to what he was feeling.
As he cleared the grove, however, he couldn't help but smile as he spotted her. She wasn't looking his way, so he picked up his pace to reach her, Clefable in tow.
As he got closer to where she was sitting he spoke up. "Ah, Dawn! I'm sorry I'm late...um... these are for you."
He offered the bouquet to her, feeling his nervousness taking over again.
Hearing Lucas' voice made her smile. She stopped the splashing of her feet. Then she turned and stepped back on dry land, took the flowers from his hand and smiled even more.
"Flowers, for me? Wow, I'm... I'm not sure what to say."
They were pink roses. Pink was one of Dawn's favourite colours, besides blue. They were beautiful flowers, blooming vividly and smelling lovely. Taking a whiff of their aroma, Dawn held the flowers in her arms as she gestured for Lucas to sit on the blanket.
"You're not late at all. If you take a seat beside me, you can take off your socks and shoes and dip your feet in the water. It's quite cool at this time of night. Was it a hard journey up here?"
Lucas laughed a little and readjusted his beret. "I guess you don't really have to say anything. I thought you'd like them, and, I wanted to do something to apologize for the, ah....incident...with the PNG."
Smiling, he gave a quiet "thank-you" as he seated himself next to the Sinnoh Champion. He did as told, leaving his shoes and socks next to the blanket, and rolled up the bottoms of his pants a little to avoid getting them wet.
"It wasn't bad at all, to be honest," he replied, looking out over the waters. "The Trainers left me alone when they saw that my hands were full. What about yourself? Did they try to battle you?"
Clefable pricked up her super-sensitive ears and stared into the water's glassy surface. She knew she had heard another Pokemon in there, but it wasn't the usual Water Pokemon. Lucas noticed her confused curiosity, but dismissed it as simply being interested in the water.
"It's not your... fault at all..." Just the thought of the various incidents over the PNG made her want to crawl into a hole and hide there like a Diglett.
"Nevermind that. I had no problems getting up here too. A couple of them tried to battle me but ended up backing off after Piplup started being a little bossy penguin and started pecking their trainers..."
She coughed and rummaged in her bag, taking out the two meal boxes each looking like this with two Swinub riceballs. She handed one to Lucas and then settled one on her lap before taking out the flask of tea and placing it between them. Finally she moved the bag and placed it on the other side of her.
"You must be hungry, so I bought something for us while I was at Celadon. They're kinda cute, they're almost too good to eat..."

Lucas nodded understandingly, dropping the subject and swirling the water around with his foot. He didn't really want to think about it, either(although the "hot list" still made him curious).
"That sounds like the Piplup I know," he replied laughingly. "Even back at the lab he was like that. It's good that you had no trouble getting here, though."
Surprised, he took the box carefully and inspected its contents. To find food greeting him, he smiled. "Oh, thank you! If I had known we were eating, though, I would have brought something," he said, sheepishly. "But thank you."
He grinned at the Swinub shapes, and commented, "It is cute, and creative. Pity that it's for eating, but it would be a waste not to, I guess."
Lucas took a bite out of it and nodded at its good taste. Clefable, giving up on looking for the mystery Pokemon, wandered closer and placed itself in Lucas' lap. The boy Trainer laughed and broke off a piece, handing it to the eager Fairy Pokemon who happily nibbled on it.

And underneath the water, Mesprit listened and watched. It felt Lucas' embarrassment and admiration, it felt Dawn's shyness and affection. It floated at the bottom of the lake, having fun with a couple of Magikarp along the way. Mesprit cared for Dawn deeply, because she had freed it, pursued it and most of all respected it; she was worthy of it's loyalty and service. It sensed Clefable trying to make it out, but it dove deeper and made itself scarce.
"You didn't need to bring anything, I was the one who invited you here."
Dawn took a bite out of the Swinub rice ball and grinned.
"These are so good!" she cried out, and continued eating. "You have no idea how all these different shapes and boxes were taunting me in the store. There was one that had all the Sinnoh starters, loads of Pikachu ones... I'll have to take you there!"
Noticing that Lucas had given some of his to Clefable, she turned to address it. "Did you like it too, Clefable?"

The beret-wearing teenager shrugged lightheartedly, enjoying his meal. "Yes, but still, it would have been nice to. Oh well, what can one do?"

Clefable beamed and nodded, answering as best she could with her mouth full. Once she had swallowed, she took the other of Lucas' riceballs and held it up to her face, pointing from the food to herself. Lucas interpreted for Dawn.
"Next time she wants you to get one with Clefables on them," he laughed, and the Pokemon nodded vigorously.
She laughed at Clefable. The fairy Pokemon was adorable and her laughter was happy and light.
"The shop is really nice! They have these chefs behind the counter in an open kitchen and they tend to do the popular Pokemon but if you ask, they'll do any one you please. So I'm sure they can get a Clefable one sorted. Yeah, no problem!"
Taking another bite of her Swinub shaped riceball, she stayed quiet as she chewed it and then swallowed.
"Um... you're probably wondering why I asked you out here."
Clefable, satisfied with the answer and Dawn's laughter, beamed joyfully and danced over to the water to play once more. Lucas smiled after her, but then felt the silence descend. Self-consciously he took a bite out of the remaining riceball.
When his companion spoke up again, Lucas turned to give her his full attention, a worried expression crossing fleetingly over his face. "Well, I suppose, yes," he answered quietly.
Awkward silence in which Dawn just looks at Lucas' eyes and wishes that she could melt into them right now.
"I don't know what this is, actually. Because I don't know what I am to you."
Dawn pulled her feet out of the water and stood on the blanket - standing straight and looking out towards the vista of water and sky.
"This could be a pleasant, relaxing meeting between two friends. Or it's some kind of romantic date. I don't know."
She turned back and looked at Lucas, looking at her.
"I set this up in the vain attempt to try and figure it out."
Her eyes were actually tearing up and it took a lot of effort for Dawn not to burst into full on sobbing. She sank back down to the blanket on her knees.
"And it's all because at that PNG thing, you were so nice to me beyond that what a friend normally is! That's altered about what I thought I felt about you!"
And suddenly the whole thing spiraled out of control. No, wait, crying wasn't supposed to be happening! He did something horribly wrong here, which wasn't supposed to happen and he was confused and alarmed and what was that last sentence? Stunned, he had taken too long to recover his thinking skill and she had stood up and sat back down and was in tears. Or about to be.
And yet, she was saying something incredibly important. She...liked him? Assuming that altering the way she thought about him meant for the better. Lucas reached out and grasped her hands, running his thumbs over hergently over her fingers and trying to calm her down so he could not fall all over himself trying to get a sentence straight.
"Wait," he said breathlessly, "wait.
"If...you wanted it to be," he began slowly, "this...could be...a date. Because I...well, yes, I was being nicer to you than a friend would normally be, because I..um, I, you know, I like you."
Lucas could feel his face heating up and he mentally smacked himself. He'd trip over his words no matter how long he waited to say them. Clefable tactfully kept its distance.
"So, if you'd like...this is a date. A first one."
Lucas wondered if he should let her hands go so she could wipe her eyes. But then she might think he had been lying. Clichéd romance movies he had happened to see before told him to wipe the tears away himself, but he couldn't really do that either. All in all he felt awkward, but he hoped it didn't show.
"Would I really say it if I didn't mean it?" he asked gently. "You know me, Dawn, come on." He laughed softly and squeezed her hands reassuringly.
Clefable's wings wagged excitedly as she watched the outline of the mystery Pokemon form in the water. She wondered when her Trainer would get done with his human stuff so he could come over and look. Unfortunately for her, however, things in the water were a little farther down in his to-do list.
Without much ado, Dawn quickly grabbed her bag, closed it and stood up. She grabbed her shoes with her socks in them and carried them in her hands.
"It was nice seeing you Lucas, really..."
She started running away from the cape as fast as she could.
"Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!"
Out of the water burst Mesprit, gracefully and showering Lucas in sparkling drops of water. It looked at Lucas for a moment, then Clefable. Mesprit then turned to see Dawn running off... without her shoes on but oh well. That was how his trainer was.
With another cry, Mesprit started following Dawn.
Unfortunately for her though, she had left her scarf on the cape in addition to her hat, which she had left on the blanket.

He analyzed what he'd said earlier, but he couldn't see anything blatantly offensive. So.. what had happened? What had gone awry?
Clefable, concerned, came over to him and tugged at his sleeve. Lucas barely noticed, watching Dawn's figure disappear into the trees. He gave a bitter chuckle at himself, taking off his hat and running his hand through his hair.
"I thought I was doing okay, too," he murmured. He looked back down to the abandoned blanket to see her scarf and hat, lying forgotten on the edge of the quilt. Lucas sighed quietly, then moved to pick them up and began to fold up the blanket. It was certainly going to be awkward to return them; after all, if she ran away from him she wouldn't likely want to approach him once more.
Once finished neatly folding the quilt and laying her belongings on top of it, the young Trainer sat back down at the water's edge, gently stroking his Pokemon's ears. He didn't cry-- he hadn't for a long time. But he couldn't disguise the shaking of his shoulders.

Mesprit zoomed from where Dawn and Barry were towards the cape and where Lucas most likely still was. It still detected the boy's presence there and hung back when it saw that he was shaking and struggling to keep a hold on itself. It stopped and hung back respectfully.
Dawn meanwhile, was running back as fast as she could. Encountering Barry knocked back some sense into her and she needed to sort this mess out otherwise she would regret it for the rest of her life. She looked up, and saw Mesprit. The Emotion Pokemon looked down at her.
"Is he still there?"
It nodded.
"Okay!"
Running back to the cave, she saw Lucas and she saw how sad he was. Nevermind how much noise her running must have created, she ran up to him and stood there for a moment, catching her breath.
"Lucas, what I did was stupid. But that was because I was so afraid I was going to do something wrong, and then I did."
She kneeled down infront of him, and with a deep breath gave him a kiss.
