Another tunnel, full of more rock, and dark, and the same Pokémon, and the same everything else that he'd been seeing for the past two or three weeks. Shun was pretty tired of it by now. If he saw one more Geodude, he was going to smash some rocks himself. Some Geodude rocks ( ... )

After a few minutes, Takumi reached for the only occupied Pokéball at his waist and released Wumpus. The Slowpoke yawned emphatically.

"Sloooo... ooowww... ?"

"Hey, if I have to be awake, so do you," Takumi insisted. "At least for a little bit. Shun'll probably come back and make me move, soon, so then you get to go away. But when Little Foot evolves, I might make you ride her, and then you'll have to stay awake more often, you slacker." It was vaguely pleasing to know that there was a creature on this planet who was lazier than Takumi himself.

A few feet away, a Budew squeaked in surprise, then began cheering. Takumi could imagine that Spacefriend had picked her up and started flying around with her. (He still liked to try to kidnap small Pokémon and children, even if it never ended well.) Blossom liked it, so Takumi didn't bother stopping them. If they strayed too far, Little Foot would herd them back. She never let Blossom far from her sight.

Wumpus made a soft thump noise with his tail. "Poooo... ke." He thumped his tail again ( ... )

Shun could feel the clearing where they'd been sleeping the last couple of days before he saw it. His vision had grown accustomed to the dark, but not by a lot.

"Takumi! Takumi get up now! I found the goddamn exit!"

It shouldn't have surprised him that all of his cousin's Pokémon were out of their pokéballs. It didn't. But it was dark, and he couldn't really see where he was going, and he certainly didn't see the Slowpoke stretched across the rocky ground. So, of course, he went sprawling over it, hitting the ground palms outstretched.

He sucked in a breath as the rocks cut into his skin. It stung, but he'd had worse before.

"Oooowww. Okay. What was that Takumi, I hope that wasn't you."

Okay, now Takumi felt bad. He recalled Wumpus, and the light from the Pokéball lit up the small cavern for just a moment. Shun was, expectedly, getting up onto his hands and knees from the spill. Takumi slid that direction across the floor, moving to help his cousin up.

"That was Wumpus," he said. "Sorry, I should have put him away when I heard you coming." Once they were both standing, he let Shun go. "Are you gonna be able to find the exit again?" he asked. He didn't sound - or, indeed, feel - very concerned with the answer. While he was pretty much done with caves for the next few decades, he was never in any hurry to get anywhere. All things came to those who waited.

Delancey and Emma circled around the pair of them, quiet rustles in the air, and Takumi looked up, though he couldn't see them. Even if Shun couldn't find his way out, these two had probably seen the exit, as well, and might be able to take them back there.

Then he noticed something. "Where's Houndoom?"

Shun wiped his hands off on his pants, they were already dirty, so more dirt wasn't going to hurt anything. He almost wished Takumi hadn't recalled the Slowpoke, he kind of wanted to kick him. He often wanted to kick the pink lazy creature. It wasn't as endearing as his cousin was.

At Takumi's last question he smirked.

"Houndoom is how we're going to find the exit again. I left him there. Like I'm spending more any more time here than I have to. Now c'mon!"

He punched Takumi in the shoulder (or possibly the collarbone, it felt a little hard, and Takumi was ridiculously tall.) and turned around. Then turned again. Great, he couldn't remember which direction he had come from. This was totally Wumpus' fault.

Grabbing the third Pokéball over on his belt he tossed his Poochyena out.

"Go find Houndoom." Poochyena barked and the sound of sniffing could be heard.

"I told you," were the first words out of Takumi's mouth. "I told you he'd come in handy." After a pause, he added for clarity, "Poochyena, not Houndoom. Aren't you glad you have him now?"

He trailed along behind his cousin and the Poochyena at a slow amble - he rarely travelled at any other pace - with his Pokémon trailing behind them. Delancey and Emma chased each other around in the upper reaches of the cavern, while Little Foot sauntered along with Blossom on her back and Spacefriend wrapped about her neck.

Takumi was almost a little sad that they'd be heading into a town soon, because he usually had to put his Pokémon away when they reached civilization. Still, he knew Shun would be happy, especially if this was the northern exit, like it was supposed to be. That meant impending snow, and snow made Shun happy.

Snow also made Takumi's toes cold. He glanced down at his sandals with a frown. "I'm gonna have to find different shoes...."
