Characters: Koga, Janine Date/Time: 30th August Location: Fuchsia City, Fuchsia Gym Warnings: Squishy huggy family time. Summary/Notes: Prose style. Koga goes home to Fuchsia. It's a surprise!
Janine sighed with a note of relief, as she spotted the ever familiar gym ahead in the distance. Today was unbearably hot and muggy, and all she wanted to do was go back to the gym and try to stave off the heat

Koga had the sense to put his tea down immediately before he was trapped in Janine's vice grip of a hug. She was petite like her mother, but she had the strength of her father when she needed it. It usually came out in her hugs, which was slightly surprising. Her arms wrapped around his waist as she held on close and Koga returned the hug briefly before patting her on the head.
"I wish not to feel like a guest in my own home." he said flatly as he looked at the bags of groceries that Janine brought back. The last thing he wanted was Janine to run out and buy massive amounts of food, so he breathed a little sigh of relief.
"How have you been little one? I apologise for not visiting more often." Koga's voice was gentle, without the usual gruffness or steeliness it normally carried.
"I know you're not a guest," she said, sounding amused, "but it's still good manners to keep a clean house." She broke the hug, and she beamed: Koga hadn't changed a single bit in the days he had been gone. Maybe the grey in his temples had spread just a tiny bit further, but that hardly matter. He seemed to be in good health, and honestly, that was all Janine cared about.
"Let me go put the groceries away, and then I shall join you." With that, she scooped up the groceries yet again and headed toward the kitchen, wasting no time putting away what she had bought. When she was done with that, she fixed herself a snack of her own-- cheese and crackers and a glass of water.
"All right then," she said to herself, taking a seat at the kotatsu. She took a sip of water, and then: "So! The plateau must be keeping you busy, I assume! How has it been? Have you fought against any worthy challengers?"
"Hmm... no trainers out of the ordinary, really. It is either I or Bruno who end up taking the majority of the unprepared ones out." he remarked calmly as he resumed sipping his tea. Work was work, he spent half of his time dealing with papers rather than actually battling trainers. Bruno sometimes made his job a bit too easy.
"I have been the same as I always have been. And what about you, Janine?" Koga focused his attention on his daughter, looking at her curiously. He was protective of her and he had respected his wishes by being less overbearing and not asking his acolytes to spy on her, unlike the past. "You have kept the gym in impeccable condition."
To be honest, in his eyes, the gym was the least of his worries. Janine was at that age where it was natural for men and women to have interest in one another. Ninjas somehow had a reputation of being very good in the sack, hence them being more desirable than most. Somehow he'd have to breach the topic delicately.
"I've been the same as well," she responded, also taking a drink from the glass of water she had. She looked around the gym. "That was very nice of you to say," she added on, "because it doesn't feel like I've done much. Although I do need to get around to thoroughly cleaning it-- it's around that time again I do need to detox this place." Keeping a gym with a poisonous specialty was much more work to maintain, as she and her father knew, because it could result in serious health issues for not just any challengers, but the leaders as well. This was remedied by a special cleaning crew out in Celadon City that came to scrub down the Fuchsia Gym every three months; Janine had realized that she should have called last week, so she would get right on that as soon as her father left

Damn, he was getting old. Normally he'd be more on the bat but he was at home and he was relaxing. Plus she was his daughter. She grew up watching her daddy's moods and was probably very astute to it.
Koga cleared his throat and took another sip of tea before continuing. It was a delicate subject to breach, so a delicate but direct approach was needed.
"Janine, I know we haven't talked much about the interactions between men and women. I hardly think it's my speciality.
"But you're at the age in which men and women take an acute interest in interacting with one another and I, as your father am naturally concerned. I have noticed that you've been spending a lot of time with that boy, Falkner and naturally wondered..."
Janine had absolutely nothing to hide from her father, and that was the truth, but she still didn't like the direction this conversation was heading, because it would undoubtedly be an awkward one. She actually hadn't seen Falkner for a couple weeks now, but there was the matter of Green...
Inwardly, she sighed-- Janine had a sneaking suspicion that the sudden interest Green suddenly had in her wouldn't last; after all, wasn't there someone else he was interested in? She didn't remember, nor did she want to. Besides, it wasn't as if she was actually doing things of that sort with the Viridian Gym Leader; there were simply getting to know each other better, that was all. For now, Janine would not mention him, unless it came to such
( ... )
One tap, two taps, three. All the meanwhile he was looking directly at Janine, trying to make her uncomfortable. If she felt uncomfortable with her answer, it would show.
"As long as you're not doing anything indiscreet, then I have no problems."
Koga smiled and reached over to ruffle her hair. Yes, she was an adult already but she'd always be Daddy's girl.
"You shall have my support regardless of who you choose to see. As long as you are sensible."
The wind rustled in the background causing the soft tinkle of a windchime. Koga was then reminded of why he had come back home to see his daughter. This was an even harder subject to mention than the one about Janine's love life. At least for Koga it was.
"We have been busy at the league recently," began Koga quietly after a moment. "The Kanto/Johto and Sinnoh Leagues have been preparing for a member exchange and the paperwork needs to be arranged for that."
Her father's tapping was an all-too familiar habit of his; while it no longer intimidated her (it was a favorite method of his to find when she had gotten herself in trouble when she was younger, and it always worked), it was still something she disliked. Janine, however, kept a good face, and felt more relieved when his hand messed up her hair. Koga was not one to show much affection, after all, so seeing the break in his usual steely demeanor comforted her.
His next topic, though, intrigued her: "An exchange program between the leagues? I assume you're going to go then?"
