brainstorming, brainstorming

I got an idea for my next story, once I finish 476. It popped into my head less than an hour ago, and immediately every bone in my body said, "YES!"

So, premise: Steampunk. Pirates.

What I've come up with so far is that the economy is in a depression. Main Character 1 is a young graduate with a degree in engineering. Problem? No jobs, so he's two steps away from being put out on the street.
Enter Main Character 2, a mysterious pirate, first mate on a rogue airship. Rogue airship in question stops in a town and discreetly sends out the word that they need an engineer.
Word reaches character 1, who, not wanting to resort to prostitution, is desperate enough to apply for the job. He is, naturally, accepted, and so his life as a pirate begins!

As for the plot, I'm thinking that maybe, it can turn out that the depression isn't a natural fluctuation of the economy, but the result of a very corrupt government elite. And that maybe character 2 can be the son of a high-ranking government official, and so the pirates have a political agenda, rather than just "d'arr matey, lootin' yer booty." (Double entendre intended.) Though of course booty-looting does occur. They ARE, after all, pirates. Besides, political agendas require FUNDS!

So, character 1 gets drawn into character 2's web of intrigue, and eventually becomes his confidante. Romance ensues, blah blah.

Also, I'm thinking that the ship's captain should be a girl. Just because I have a major thing for badass female characters.

Ironically, the inspiration for this comes from the fact that I've wanted to try my hand at steampunk for YEARS, and the song "Gay Pirates" by Cosmo Jarvis.
