Writing musings. Feedback appreciated. :)

Okay, so I said that my next writing project would be another humor piece, but I kind of don't want to do it. I mean, I do, I love the characters that I've created for it, but after writing a 100k+ comedy, I'd like to do something serious.

I'm thinking sci-fi. Of the post-apocalyptic variety. From here on in, this will be pretty disjointed as I jot down random notes...

I would totally love some feedback. Suggestions/questions welcome.

Working title: Beyond the End of All Things

Note to self: Come up with better title.

History: In the year 2420, World War 6 wiped out 90% of Earth's human population, and leaving more scarred by radioactive fallout and disease. Nearly all the major cities were completely decimated, leaving 'hot' zones where they once stood. The nuclear bombs basically fucked up Earth so much that life became unsustainable, and in a last attempt to save the species, the remaining healthy humans were herded into a huge-ass spaceship and sent in search of a new planet.

They found one. Planet Needs-a-name (PNAN for now) is slightly smaller than Old Earth, and 80% of its surface is covered by a vast ocean. The landmass is one continent, with intensely varied terrains. Note to self: invent freaky plant life with which to populate said terrains. The humans, reaching PNAN, were sure they had found their haven, so they landed...only to discover that PNAN already had a dominant species. The-species-that-needs-a-name (STNAN for now) are a sentient race; not as highly developed as humans in the brain department, but cunning, cruel hunters. The STNAN also evolved to use a metaphysical force present on PNAN, like, but different than, magic.

Holy crap, this is sounding a lot like The Coldfire Trilogy. That was entirely unintentional.

Note to self: make sure details are different enough so that I don't get sued by CS Friedman.

BACK TO HISTORY: This force also interfered with human technology, essentially shutting it down so that, even if the humans were of a mind to pack up and get the hell out of there, the were stuck. However, humans are adaptive little buggers, and they discovered that using body parts (horns, bones, etc) of the STNAN allowed them to crudely channel the metaphysical force. Relegated to the deserts and wastelands of PNAN, humans desperately attempted to build a society...

STORYLINE PART: It is unknown how long ago mankind landed on PNAN. Haven McWinnan is a visionary in a society of pragmatics, an intellectual avant-garde amongst provincial sheep, a cynic, and something of a frustrated genius. He lives in a village on the desert coast; a very superstitious, fearful bunch. They fear the creatures that live in the ocean almost as much as the creatures that haunt the fertile plains and forests. Haven, of course, being of a more realistic nature, knows that deep-ocean-dwellers wouldn't come close enough to the land to cause them any threat. Therefore, he uses the beach as his own personal refuge; he's the only one 'brave' enough to venture close to the ocean. Until Amir Mackintosh very literally washes up on the beach one day, seemingly possessed of all sorts of knowledge that either doesn't exist in the first place, or was lost when Earth technology was decimated, and little else.

Haven was an insignificant member of a dying race. Now, armed with secrets thought lost to man, he and Amir might be the key to survival...for all humanity. All 13,000 of them that are left. Of course, he's going to learn to channel the planet's mysterious power source, venture to the heart of enemy territory, nearly die multiple times, and fall in love along the way.

Will be M/M slash. Probably rated M for violence and dark concepts. Not sex. I don't write sex scenes. I don't even like reading them. If this turns out like I plan, it will be highly philosophical, as well...

Edit: The planet still needs a name, but the characters have found some...I edited them in. I also need to name the mysterious native species, but I'm really just having the humans refer to them as The Others most of the time.
Oh, and to make it more scientifically plausible, the 'strange force' will actually be a really, really strong magnetic force on this planet...and The Others will be able to manipulate it to move things and create illusions and such due to an abundance of a rare metal in their exoskeleton-like-outer-shell.
