New Year's Eve with Cthulhu and the Doctor

(aka The Dog Days of Arkham)

So, last night luinmir and I were trying to figure out what to do with ourselves for New Year's Eve. We checked out various things going on about town and weighed our options. After much deliberation, Kat told me she wasn't feeling that great, and could we just stay in? I said, sure, we can stay in and play games. We went to the store and got some festive food and drink, picked out Arkham Horror, and settled in for what may be the perfect New Year's setup:

Kat asked if we could toy around with some of the home-brewed characters over on Boardgamegeek.com, specifically the Doctor Who related ones, and I said "sure." Thus commenced the New Year's Eve Confrontation: Doctor vs. Cthulhu!

We printed out the homemade sheets for the Ninth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, and K-9. Kat took the cool kids and I took Rose and K-9. We used various other game figures for the characters (Dracula and Mina from Fury of Dracula for the Doctor and Rose, a Shotgun Guy from Zombies for Jack, and a sad little soy field for K-9... it was the boxiest thing we had available).

The TARDIS materialized in the Miskatonic U. Library:

And the group scattered about town. The Doctor ended up in the hospital with an injury after trying to help a student in the Science Building with some sort of dimensional device that would close gates around town. Jack had much more success flirting his way into some free money at the Bank. Rose and K-9 stumbled into two new gates, with Rose releasing a fearsome Hound of Tindalos, and we were fairly screwed by the end of turn one.

Turn two was much worse, as the Doctor returned to the Science Building in pursuit of a new clue there. He ran into the same student and this time he succeeded in fixing the device and closing two of the three dimensional gates currently open in the town. Unfortunately, they were the two which K9 and Rose had just stumbled through, leaving them with no way back to this dimension! To add injury to insult, the Hound tracked down the Doctor at the end of the turn and would send him back to the hospital as soon as it attacked:

From there, the game went from really bad to much worse. Rose and K-9 both ended up Lost in Time and Space when they tried to come back to the real world and had no gates to use (thanks, Doctor!).

The Hound that Rose had released had put the Doctor in the Hospital and Jack in the Asylum. Kat was sarcastically thrilled with her characters' performances thus far, as you can see: (Injures in red, Madness in green)

In keeping with the Dog theme, K-9 finally found his way back to Arkham and picked up Duke as an ally:

Rose made her way back to the real world a turn later and promptly got herself tanked at the Roadhouse. She passed out and they threw her out in the street to be feasted upon by a ghoul just as Cthulhu finally rose over the city and the others gathered to fight:

In the end, Cthulhu was way too much for us and we were all devoured. We celebrated our doom (and the new year) with Champagne while we huddled in the hallway sheltering ourselves from the celebratory gunfire out in the street:

Kat donned my motorcycle helmet for extra protection, but it made drinking too complicated:

Once that problem was resolved, the drinking resumed, and before long Arkham had a new problem to deal with:

Happy New Year! Sorry about the end of the world and all that... :/
