Everything blurs and you're walking a different road...

Mikaal had needed to get out.

In a purely physical sense, he'd had to get out of the apartment, find a new place, settle himself somewhere. On a more emotional plane, he'd needed to get away from Tony so that he could think past the pain that seemed to burn right at the center of his chest ( Read more... )

Dan was walking; he had no use for the bar - he didn't want to drown himself in alcohol and bad company. He really wanted to find Rorschach, talk to him, find out what he knew, if anything. He'd been idle for too long and that restlessness was starting to well up, like bile at the back of his throat.

He noticed he was not alone.

At first, he almost thought it was Jon there, walking toward him. But when had Jon -walked- anywhere? He couldn't recall him ever doing so; ever transporting himself in a blink of the eye.

"Hey." He said, when he came level with the man. "I haven't seen you before."

Mikaal tilted his head up, silent at first, before glancing around.

Considering what he did on occasion, being transported just about anywhere anyhow wasn't at the top of the list that might bother him. That it had been done without his notice, however, unnerved him greatly. Having spent 12 years of his life in a blur, missing something like a complete shift in space and possibly time was a little disturbing.

"I haven't seen you either. Or this place."

Because the day could go from bad to worse, apparently.

Dan approached, cautiously; there was something about this man that made his defenses flare. It was probably the blue skin - not that he held some deep grudge against Jon, it was just -- well, maybe deep down, he resented him. For not sticking around, for having more power than any one person should ever have. For not being human.

"These are the roads, I guess. I haven't been here that long myself." He began. "It's like bits and pieces of other words are collected here. People, too."

Mikaal took a minute to take the other man in, to consider his words, and finally came out with--

"I've never heard of such a thing."

And considering some of the spacetime madness he'd been involved with during his trip with Jack, that said something.

"What does it want?"

"Me neither," He replied to the first, shrugging faintly after shoving his hands in his pockets. He'd heard of alternate realities, but the science of that was all theory and no practicality.

"No idea." Dan answered. "That's something I've been wondering myself."

Mikaal occasionally needed a moment for niceties to remind him they existed. Even considering the day he had, or maybe even because of it, he pulled one hand from his jacket and extended it to Dan.

"Mikaal Tomas," he offered with a nod of his head.

Dan met that hand with his own. "Dan Dreiberg," He provided, drawing back after a brief clasp.

"There's a bar not far from here if you feel like sitting down and having a drink or two."

What he wanted was a fight, his warrior blood running hot in an attempt to deal with his pain, but a drink might be the only thing he could get tonight. The place looked a little sparse for a possible bank robbery or anything like that. So he nodded.

"I could do a drink. Do they have anything decent from off planet?"

Daniel shrugged. "Search me." He said, starting to lead the way up the road to the bar. "All you can do is check. No one actually tends the bar."

"Actually, you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows what the hell is going on around here. There's a town, but no residents." Bitterness crept into his voice, the edges of his words turning hard.

"Answers of any kind are in short supply."

He noticed the bitterness and it made him curious.

"Do you suspect foul play? Some malevolent force behind our capture?"

"Of course I do," Dan said, glancing over at the other man.

"On Halloween, a few things came out of the woodwork. Something malevolent chased a friend and I through the forest, but never actually showed itself."

"I really, really wanted to kick its ass." He added, muttering, as they reached the bar.

Mikaal was almost surprised at the smile that curled across his face. He couldn't help it. Perhaps there was a friend to be found here as he had found one in Opal City.

"I can certainly understand such a desire."

Daniel smiled back; he knew a kindred spirit when he saw one. Leading the way into the bar, he noticed it was empty.

"See, deserted." He said over his shoulder, going behind the bar to grab something random from the shelf.

"Most of the time I just wander around here, bored out of my mind."

"And there's no way out?" which was what concerned him.

Not that he had anywhere to go right now.

"No. At least none that I've found." Dan slid onto a bar stool, poured a measure of the spirits for both himself and his companion.

"So, Mikaal. Where are you from?"

While one might question the wisdom of admitting he was an alien to a stranger, one must also remember that the gentleman in question is blue with magenta hair.

"I am from Talok III originally," he said, "but the planet's long gone now. I was living in Opal City until I walked into this place."
