It had taken more than several months to break her down. Almost three years. Following the defeat of Harry Potter, Rabastan hadn't wasted time and kidnapped Hermione Granger for himself. With the Chosen One dead, the Dark Lord didn't particularly care who took what as spoils of war. He had a new regime to build. It had been easier, he often mused, to kill the Boy Who Lived to Die than to break the spirit of a mudblood girl. She feared pain, but she did not fear him, and it was that crucial point that made it difficult convincing her to obey him.
Every day, for nearly three years, Rabastan visited Hermione in the dungeons of his ancestral home. In that time, he was the only person from the outside world she had contact with. Not even the house elves were allowed near her. The clever girl would have used them to escape, no doubt. In the beginning, he was slightly disappointed with her seeming acquiescence to her new life. It had appeared that she had been reformed in a matter of a few short weeks, but it was a falsehood. Every time Rabastan turned, she was defying him again. He would punish her, but her obedience would only last as long as her wounds. The second she healed, she was once again snarling in his face.
Rabastan was quite impressed with her. The near complete isolation she was subjected to, combined with the knowledge that escape was futile and that the resistance was dead, would have destroyed any other person without him having to raise a finger, but Hermione fought and fought and fought. Starving her only weakened her physical self. Pain's lesson only lasted a short while and Rabastan had never been able to bring himself to rape women since he found the act disgusting and barbaric, and so, Hermione was spared from that fate. But there were many other tortures Rabastan was familiar with, ones that his captive also came to know.
Eventually, her basic human needs to socialize, to see beyond the same four stone walls, overcame her rationality, and she was completely broken down. From there, Rabastan built her back up. He taught her how to be his lifelong companion, how to please him, how to behave in front of other Death Eaters, the highest echelon in the new world. There were a great many times when she made mistakes in the beginning, but Rabastan would not punish her for trying to obey his wishes. It was understandable she would make mistakes, but he could be patient. When she pleased him, he rewarded her. As he soon came to find, there were a few holdovers from her previous life, behaviors too ingrained for even him to erase. The desire for praise was one of them.
So it came to pass that Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age, began to live and breathe for the whispers of "Good girl," from her master, Rabastan Lestrange. She lived almost as well as the respected purebloods. She was the only Mudblood Rabastan knew of who was allowed to read and write, had the privilege to marry, who could sit in soft chairs instead of the floor, and was not made to work as a slave. The only thing Rabastan denied her was a further education. She was to stay home with him, watch their children, carry on his bloodline, and welcome him home after a day spent catering to the Dark Lord. He relished the day she turned to him and spoke of her love for him because that was the day his power over her became complete. Hermione Granger was his.
