She trudged out of the funeral portal with the black sheet drawn tightly around her too-thin frame, the ends of her makeshift cloak fluttering lightly around her ankles in the cool evening breeze. There was only the dimmest glow in the west, a haze of lighter blue that hung over the horizon and cast a light over the parking lot brighter than the moon hanging low over the mountains to the north. The cold in the air sucked the breath from her lungs, the light confused her and jarred her brain a little bit.
It was like stepping into another world, because that's exactly what it was.
It felt like something was missing. Something had gone wrong in the story... she realized that's exactly what it felt like. The Nexus, her travels between realities, it had seemed just like a fable to her. An escape from reality, where it was safe and nothing was 'for real and truly ever'. Nobody was supposed to die except the bad guys, and the heroes always lived happily ever after, even if that just meant an apartment somewhere in a low-rent neighborhood. Raven... would she have wanted that kind of happy ending?
As she got down on her hands and knees and pulled aside the metal grate on the basement window of the place she'd been staying, she failed to notice the police cruiser pulling into the empty parking lot. Amuro did, however, notice the slam of the car door and the heavy tread of the policeman coming toward her.
Fuck.
~~
As she was 'escorted' into the backseat of the cruiser, her backpack and belongings placed in the trunk, Amuro looked out her unblackened eye at the horizon again. The sun had gone down and the moon had come up, and she wondered how many hours were left until dawn.
So much for fairytale endings.
