Last week I sent my three-song set into the Eagle and Tom Nakashima, the afternoon dj, chose my set to play today. It was a fun game to participate in, 'cause old Tom called me a few days ago and we talked a bit. Friendly fellow, and easy to talk to. He recorded what we said, and played some of it on air this afternoon. Oh, and I was so mad at self for having forgotten to tell the board to go to the eagle website and listen while I was on air. Ah, well.
I left work at 3 pm and, since Nastassya wasn't off her work yet and I had a while before picking her up, I drove down Freeport Blvd., on out to the river road, which runs along the Sacramento River. Lord, I love it out there; it's Steinbeck country...the summer sun beating down on the expansive, quiet gold fields, big green trees, shush-shush, here and there, and the highway running alongside the Sacramento River. Tom introduced my set and I was pleased bacuse he pronounced my name so nicely. He played the Janis Joplin studio demo of Me & Bobby Mcgee first, and that was special to me, because her voice came on just after my voice, so finally after all these years, it was kinda like she and I got to talk to each other. What a gorgeous version of that song; what a woman she was. When I die, I wanna meet her, right off; I'm not waiting on that. During that song, I stopped my car and let it idle while I stepped out with bare feet so I could feel the warm road under my feet and hear her voice at thesame time. I heard the grassland birds singing, too. That central-valley wind was blowing, softly and hot, and I knew, in that moment, that no matter what, I will always be safe in God's care.
Then Neil Young, The Needle and the Damage Done - well, there's just no Neil that isn't brilliant...last, Deacon Blue, Steely Dan, a song that always touches me and sometimes makes me cry, I don't know why, but I think about why alot. One day I'll figure it out.
There was my moment of fame on the radio - but heck with me - those musicians are magic-makers. I'm sure glad Tom chose my songs.
