Padma awoke with the phantom taste of ash on her tongue. It was early, not even light out yet. She sat up quickly, her nose twitching, searching for the smell of smoke- but it did not come. Her eyes narrowed in confusion, before she realised, abruptly, that she had been dreaming. She couldn't remember it, the dream, but she knew what had prompted it. George...the shop... That terrible smell that seemed to linger about the Alley for days.

A myriad of emotions stirred in her stomach, soon coming to a roiling boil: anger, regret, guilt- most of all guilt. Suddenly restless, she didn't even think about the sleep she would be missing as she got out of bed and quietly got ready for the rest of the day. Not even a glance at a wall clock, which proclaimed it to be 3:09 A.M., brought a sense of weariness back to her. She went down into the kitchen and, casting a silencing charm on the room, began to bake. The recipe required a great deal of waiting around, so she began thoroughly cleaning the kitchen, the pantry and the downstairs room, still keeping her movements as quiet as possible.

Soon enough, though, it was time to get back to it; the sky outside was beginning to grey. The last part of the recipe wasn't terribly difficult, though, nor entirely time intensive. In only a little time, she was finished. She selected a container and cast a warming charm in it, piling it full of the delicious dessert. She then sat down at the kitchen counter and began to pin an owl.

My Dear Ginny,

I'm so terribly sorry for what happened earlier this week. I have been the worst sort of friend. Please, please, please let me know if you or your need anything, or if I can do anything for you.

I'm sure your mum probably has baked and cooked enough to feed a family of thirty, but I hope she doesn't mind that I've sent along this package of jalebi.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Love,
Padma
