Molly tapped gently on the half-ajar door with one knuckle. Charlie looked pensive, maybe a little worried, and he might or might not want to talk about it, but there was no harm in asking.
She noticed he had piles of things out around him, on the bed and on the desk, and a box at his feet. "Reorganizing, dear?
Oh blast... He looked up at the door, knowing who he'd see there before he even saw her, but still holding out a hope that it was just Ginny putting on his mother's voice. He put on his usual smile and waved his hands around to the boxes. "Something like that, but I'm also packing. Do you think Ginny would like a book on broomstick care?"
They'd discussed the concept of his moving at one point, but he hadn't said when. He suspected that of his family, his mother would take it the least best. After all, he'd already left once. He just wanted it to go smoothly and not upset her too much.
Packing. Oh. Leaving again. Molly forced a smile. "Oh. Well, that's... sudden. Have you got yourself all set up somewhere, then?"
Would Ginny like a book on broom care? That was his chief concern to go along with his announcement? Of course, thinking about that only reminded her that Ginny was also all grown now, that all of them had moved on. She knew it was only natural for children to grow up and leave, but that didn't mean she had to like it. "Perhaps," she said. "I can't say."
"I...will have." Mum looked upset. He tried to keep smiling, but it was hard. "I'm moving in this weekend, actually. I won't have the keys until then." He bit his lip and gave up on the smile.
"You're not mad, are you, mum?" he asked, although as soon as he'd asked he realised she'd have to say that she wasn't, even if she was.
