Adrian smoothed his robes down and cleared some of the papers from his desk in anticipation of Zacharias' arrival. He took an extra few moments after Girvin had announced that he was waiting in the anteroom. He'd gone over his books and was fairly certain he'd offer him the position, but it never hurt to keep applicants on their toes.
Finally at a few minutes after nine he opened the door to admit Zacharias. "Good morning Mr. Smith. Please come in." He walked to his desk and gestured to Zacharias to take a chair. He clasped his hands on his desk and waited for Zach to settle himself. "I must admit I was surprised to receive your owl so soon after our conversation at the tailor's shop. I hope you were not dismissed from your position there?"
Zach tried not to fiddle with his sleeves while he waited; he'd hemmed them the smallest bit too long and it was driving him insane. For all he knew, Adrian was watching him from somewhere. He was a Slytherin, after all.
When he was finally admitted to the office, Zach put on his most professional smile and settled into the comfortable chair offered to him.
He licked his lips nervously. He'd expected a question similar to this one and had prepared for it. He would be honest. "I haven't been dismissed," he said, "I have quite enjoyed my employment at Twilfit and Tattings. But it was suggested to me by my father that I find a career that doesn't involve working with my hands, and I agreed. You and I had spoken the other day and I thought I might be suited for a position with you." There, he'd managed that well, he thought, mostly telling the truth and yet not saying that he was only here because his dad was forcing him to be.
Adrian cocked his brow at Zacharias. It sounded like their fathers were of the same mind. He hoped Zacharias' wasn't a Death Eater.
"Your father? I hope you're not here solely because of your father. You sent me the owl, after all."
"I assume you've given some thought to a position here? Share some of your ideas with me, please." He leaned back in his chair and looked levelly at Zacharias.
"Oh, no, I'm not solely here because of him. I agreed it was time for me to seek more suitable employment." Liar, his conscience scolded him, but he knew that this was a better option than working in whatever Ministry grunt job his father's friends would find for him
