Date: 13 August 1999 Characters: Lisa Turpin, Tracey Davis Location: London Status: Private Summary: Lisa and Tracey go shopping for swimwear. Completion: Incomplete
Tracey looked up and down the street, wondering what they should do. She'd decided this morning to go with the flow, not worry about looking to comfortable with Muggle London. Lisa was definitely not the sort to care either way. She might even be the sort of friend she could be open with. Either way, she was determined to have fun and shop, sans drama.
"Where was that about?" she asked, "because there's this one place I know has swimsuits. It's down Charing, and down the cross street by the Leicester station."
Lisa thought for a minute, looking up and down the street. She'd really just wandered around a lot that time, but she was pretty sure it was left. She pointed. "Down that way, I think." Then she laughed. "Which I think is pretty much opposite the way you're talking. We should definitely try your way."
Tracey laughed and pointed the other way, "Yeah, it's down there. It's a great shop, and they have amazing sales. Swim stuff might be marked down, since the summer's half over."
They headed off in that direction, in no particular rush. Lisa had mentioned spending time with Terry the other night at Utopia, so Tracey figured that was as good a place as any to start the girl talk.
"Sales would definitely be good," Lisa said, nodding. She had a bit of money saved up, but she'd hate to spend it all on some silly swimsuit that she would only be able to wear a few more times this summer. "I've never actually bought one for myself, so I'm sure my jaw will be hanging open a bit at how much so little cloth could possibly cost."
Then Tracey asked about Terry, and that stupid grin flashed across her face again. "Yeah, things are good. We...got things worked out." She glanced over at the other girl as they walked. "Couldn't make myself give up on him, I guess."
"Oh they can get bloody pricey," Tracey complained, wishing she'd kept better track of the one she'd bought a few years back. She had a feeling she'd end up buying far more than just a swimsuit today. She had no willpower when it came to these sorts of things.
"Good. I'm glad," she said, a little surprised to mean it so sincerely. Lisa had looked pretty awful after the break up, and while Tracey was not the sort to get broken up over a bloke, she was glad Lisa was happy.
"So what sort of boyfriend is he? Strong, silent caveman sort, or writes you poems and talks about his feelings?" she teased.
"Guess it's a good thing I'm not terribly picky about that sort of thing, then," Lisa said. "I'm sure I can find something in the discounted sections, so long as they've got my size."
She looked both ways as they crossed a small side street, glad that the rain here wasn't so bad as in Hogsmeade. A light drizzle she could handle. "Me, too. Those few weeks were awful, to put it mildly."
Lisa could tell Tracey was teasing, but the question made her think ab moment nonetheless. "Neither, really. He's...the best mate type?" She looked at the other again, sure that this didn't explain anything at all, but not really knowing how to put it any other way.
Tracey grinned, thinking the best mate type sounded rather nice, really. "So he's like, the...wrestling matches turn into snog sessions sort?" she asked, giggling.
She sighed dramatically as they crossed the street. "Where can I order one of those?"
Lisa automatically opened her mouth to refute further teasing, then closed it again. She thought of horsing around in the water at Clevedon and where it had eventually lead. "Well, actually, yeah. That's rather close." She giggled, too.
"Order one of what?" she asked, glancing around for a second before she realised Tracey was still talking about her relationship with Terry. Lisa laughed at her own obtuseness. "Well, I picked mine up in Ravenclaw, but I'm afraid he's rather one of a kind."
"Right," Tracey said, sighing a bit. It was really too bad things hadn't worked out with...well, that was water under the bridge anyway. Can't force things.
"Maybe I'll scope out the selection at your party," she said, grinning. "You'll have to give me a heads up about who's single and whose toes I might be stepping on." After a beat, she added, "Not that it'll necessarily stop me, but I would like to know who to watch out for."
Lisa grinned back. "If I end up with enough people to satisfy Colleen, I probably won't know half the people there. Though I do highly recommend the beach route." She lowered her voice to a conspiratorial tone. "It's the bikinis, you see. Blokes don't know what to do with that much bare skin out there."
She laughed. It wasn't something she'd ever given much thought before, but after Clevedon she had definitely learned the advantage of such things. Not that she was planning on parading around in a bikini just for the attention, but if it happened to be appropriate attire....
"So things with Kevin are a no-go, then?" Lisa asked, glancing at Tracey. She knew he had seemed rather smitten, but she'd not gotten a particularly good feel for what Tracey thought of him. "After that first date, I mean."
Tracey giggled, "Well, I'll have to find a really good one today then. You might have bagged your perfect bloke already, but I'm still looking."
"No, I don't know. I wasn't feeling it," she admitted. Now it was even hard to be his friend, with this uncomfortable one-sided attraction thing. "PLus, we live together. It's a little off now, so I'm trying to give us both some time to...readjust."
She shrugged, "Maybe a Ravenclaw's not right for me."
Lisa nodded. "Yeah, I can see how that would be a bit awkward. And Kevin's...enthusiastic, to say the least." She gave Tracey a knowing look.
"Maybe not," she agreed with a shrug, adding teasingly, "But then again, we are all slightly different. I mean, look at Kevin and then look at Corner. Michael, that is," Lisa clarified, in case Tracey didn't really know her friend all that well. "I can't imagine ever putting the two of them in the same category in the dating pool, you know?"
She shrugged, unfamiliar with the name. "Don't know him. What's he like?" Maybe he was fit. And single.
"It's about four blocks this way," she said, pointing down the street they were about to cross. "White awning. It's called Oasis. Look out for it. I know about what block it's on, but I don't want to pass it."
"Tall, dark hair, glasses," Lisa said, motioning to show about how tall Michael was. "He was in practically all of my classes, so I'm sure you had a few with him. Big Quidditch fan?" she added, in case that helped it ring a bell. Merlin knew he talked about it enough that it was probably common knowledge. "He's...Michael. Funny guy, if you know the type. Always manages to cheer me up when I need it, seemingly without effort. Not that I'm playing matchmaker for my mates. God, that would be weird," she said, laughing.
"White awning, gotcha." They walked a bit further, and Lisa watched for the landmark, though they still almost missed it. A rather large tree had sprouted some branches that nearly covered the name from afar, but as they approached the windows, Lisa grinned. Looked like this would be a good place.
"Hey, you can just consider it matchmaking for me, not him," Tracey giggled. "You'll have to introduce me. I am and honorary Claw, after all. I should know all my housemates."
"Yeah, this is it," she said, grabbing the door for Lisa, sighing at the cool blast of air. She looked around a moment before pointing to the back of the store. "There are some."
Lisa laughed, rolling her eyes a bit. "An honorary Claw, eh? And just who dubbed you with this title? Did he make you produce a copy of your NEWT scores and a list of all the books you read in the last year?" Then she shrugged. "No harm in introducing, though. I don't exactly consider that matchmaking. The hard part's up to you."
Going inside the store, she headed toward the back of the store where Tracey had indicated, seeing the racks of swimsuits almost immediately. Lisa picked up the first one that caught her eye, looked at the price tag, then immediately replaced it.
"Fifty quid? Are they joking?" she whispered. The next one was a little better, though, probably because it wasn't covered in rhinestones, but still wasn't exactly her style. "You looking for anything in particular?"
"Where was that about?" she asked, "because there's this one place I know has swimsuits. It's down Charing, and down the cross street by the Leicester station."
