Esther had agreed to watch Teddy for a few hours that evening. Of course, Andromeda hadn't told her mother-in-law why she needed a babysitter. Somehow, she didn't think Esther was ready to hear 'well, I have a date with a man younger than my own daughter, cheers'. During the past week, Andy wasn't entirely sure that she was ready to hear such a statement, much less make it. That hadn't stopped her from accepting Roger's invitation. She couldn't even blame too much wine or an odd emotional state, not that she really attributed snogging him on his sofa to anything other than lust and want. She wanted to go out with him, so she had said yes. It was really quite simple, even if it wasn't that simple at all.
She usually ignored such desires, thought about her professional reputation or Teddy or number of things that had been ingrained in her practically from birth and resisted. It had been so surprising when Roger kissed her last week, that she hadn't had time to really resist. Not that she had wanted to. It was only after, when she got home to the quiet house and realized what she'd done, that she had felt conflicted and slightly panicked. She knew that she wasn't betraying Ted, but it still sort of felt that way. Ted had been the only man in her life, the only date she'd ever had, the only lover, and it didn't matter that he'd been gone for over a year. Was that enough time? She still missed him, just about every day she thought about him at least once, but the aching had lessened over time. Still, she couldn't help but think she was doing something wrong by accepting a date with another man.
It was just a date. A date to see if things were too awkward or too strange or too whatever reason might come up to convince them that they should remain friends only and call the snog a fluke. She liked Roger a lot, probably more than she should, but it wasn't love or anything new as complicated as that yet. It might never be, even if she gave it a chance. She wanted him, wanted to feel him naked beneath her and to have him do things that only a husband should do to a woman, and that scared her, as reluctant as she was to admit it even to herself. While she had a rather broad outlook on life and didn't much care about all the rules she had been taught by her mother, there was a still a part of her that couldn't imagine just shagging anyone and everyone without it being part of an actual relationship.
It was old-fashioned, practically archaic in these modern times, and she didn't judge others for what they did, since she certainly knew that Dora had been physically involved with Remus for ages before they ever got married. It was confusing to find herself in a situation where she wanted something that her upbringing kept reminding her that she shouldn't have. She had ignored all those ridiculous rules and expectations at eighteen, but, even then, she and Ted had been married before they actually had sex. Kissing and a bit of touching was all she'd allowed to that point. It probably wasn't right to compare that, though, when she knew that she'd proposed after they'd only been dating a couple of months, and the circumstances had led to a fast courtship. She liked to think that she was independent and daring enough to have shagged him even if they hadn't got married. Now, she wasn't entirely sure because she was this much older and uncertain whether she could have sex without anything else being there.
She missed sex. A lot. She and Ted had always had a physical relationship, even when they were fighting, and it had been almost two years now since she had been touched by any hand other than her own. Perhaps her desire for Roger would null her doubts. She snorted when she realized that she had spent who knows how long thinking about shagging Roger when they hadn't even had their date yet. There was a very good possibility that she wouldn't even have the opportunity to make such a choice, after all.
While she honestly didn't care that much about an age difference, since she was young by wizarding standards and he was old enough to make his own decisions, she had reminded herself of it so often since she had started to develop feelings for him that it was difficult to just ignore completely now. There was also the matter of her job and the fact that the gossip section had accused her of shagging her own boss, so the possibility of dating an employee at the Ministry was something that could be viewed as scandalous, even if it wasn't breaking any actual rules. She had confirmed that before accepting the date, since she didn't want to face unknown consequences after, should it come up. Public opinion wasn't the same as the Ministry rules, and that's where Roger might suffer for dating a Death Eater, for dating someone older than his own parents, for dating whatever rumor had recently been attached to the Black family name. Teddy was young enough that it wouldn't affect him, really, but she had to worry about that, too.
Still, she was excited about tonight. Even with all the problems that something as simple as a date might cause, she didn't regret saying yes. She had actually bought a new dress for tonight, after deciding that her other dresses just wouldn't be appropriate for various reasons. Mostly, she liked the little thrill at finding something pretty to wear and dressing to impress a man who kissed extremely well. While the dress did great things to her breasts and showed off a lot of leg, it was still age appropriate, so she didn't look someone attempting to be twenty again. She had been twenty once before, and she had no desire to return to that age. She didn't mind being forty-five--no, forty-six now--and having a lifetime of experience behind her. The loss of her family and so many people that she cared about was something she wish she hadn't had to go through, but nothing would change that, so she didn't often waste time wishing things were different.
After she fixed her hair and applied cosmetics, she slipped on her pumps and went downstairs. Roger would be there soon, and she was curious where he planned to take her. She hadn't been sure if it would be Muggle or magical, so she had decided to wear a Muggle dress, since that was acceptable anywhere. Esther had told her to just pick up Teddy after she was finished, but she knew that she wouldn't want to leave him too late because it would be difficult to get him settled in for the night. That still left several hours, though, and that should be enough time for a date. She glanced at the clock before she sat down to wait.
