Hestia had finally relented to let Percy come over. If he'd been any other bloke, she'd have been well shot of him by now, but she cared a lot about Percy. He was the first person she'd been with who'd really understood her and cared about her and not made her feel like a fat ugly idiot.

When Percy knocked on her door, she answered it. He looked nervous. As he should, she thought to herself.

"Come in," she said, closing the door behind him. "Would you like a cup of tea?"

Percy cleared his throat when Hestia opened the door. She looked- well, rather unhappy. He couldn't blame her.

He walked in when she invited him in, nodding a little. "Hello," he said, and it sounded inexplicably awkward leaving his mouth. "Tea would be nice, thank you." He probably wouldn't drink it, but it was always good to have something to do with his hands.

"How are you?" he asked, somewhat quietly, afraid that the question would upset her but unable to be impolite and not even try.

Hestia nodded and flicked her wand at the kettle which began to boil. She poured them each a cup of chamomile and set them down on the coffee table in front of the couch. She didn't put out any biscuits. Percy definitely didn't deserve biscuits.

"Oh, I'm wonderful, Percy," Hestia replied sarcastically. "I had a really lovely weekend. You know, my sister forgot my birthday too, so you're in good company. She popped by on Saturday with some chocolates. As usual." Hestia's resentment hadn't stopped her from devouring the box in one tearful sitting, though.

So she was going to use sarcasm as a defense. Percy sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, but he couldn't really blame her. He was mad at himself for being irritated already when he should be the repentant one.

"I did not forget," he said, and then winced. That was probably not the right thing to say. "I mean, I wanted it to be nice, I did, I thought you'd like that restaurant..." he shook his head. He was not off to a good start.

"Yes, Percy, it was a lovely restaurant but that doesn't really matter, does it? You could have taken me to a horrible Muggle burger place, that McWhatever, and it would have been better. Because you would have been there. I thought you weren't that kind of bloke, Percy. I thought you were better," Hestia said, quieter now.

"McWhatever?" Percy said weakly, watching Hestia's face, feeling wretched. "I suppose I thought I was better, too..."

He sat down heavily when something struck him. The nagging feeling that he'd experienced several times in the last few weeks.

If he really loved her like he thought he was growing to, he wouldn't have let this happen. Or would he? Perhaps it was his nature to put his career in front of people he cared about- like what he did to his family. At least Hestia was in good company, he thought bitterly. "I am really very sorry, Hestia," he said, slowly, sincerely. "I know you deserve better."

"Oh you know, that one with the big yellow M and the horrific Clown and crap food," Hestia said offhandedly. It didn't really matter.

She sat down next to Percy on the couch and looked at him. He did look truly sorry. "I don't know that I want better, Perce," she said taking his hand. "I'm rather fond of you. But I can't force you to change. You've always put work first and I knew that. I'm just not so sure if I'm alright with that any more. I want to be with you, but I don't want to be an afterthought."

"Huh," Percy said, not really thinking about clowns or crap food at the moment.

He squeezed her hand reflexively when she took his. He'd miss her. His eyes shot up to her face as this thought flitted through his mind; it appeared his mind was already made up, even as he listened to her words.

She was essentially letting him make the decision: either he could commit to making her a priority- over his career- or they would end their relationship.

"You should want better," he said, finally, not ready to say the words that would end the conversation.

Hestia sighed. "Percy, this isn't about what I should want. I need to know if you're willing to work on this. On us. Seriously. And this won't work if you're never around. I'm not asking you to give up everything and put me first. I just don't want to be forgotten."

"You shouldn't have been forgotten," he said, and knew he was starting to sound like a broken record.

"Hestia..." he began. "I want you to know that you are worth it, worth the effort. But I think at this point I shouldn't be having to make that kind of effort; it should come naturally. You deserve to be with someone who will love you the way you should be loved, and do so happily and easily. Not someone who will be struggling to find a balance that may leave you this short of neglected."

He sighed deeply. "I don't think at this point in my life and my career I can be the kind of partner I would need to be for you. I'm sorry, Hestia."

Hestia had a feeling that it was what he was going to say, but it still hurt when Percy said it. She'd been silly in thinking that she'd found the right man for her, one whom she could marry.

"I'm sorry too," she said, leaning up to kiss him gently. "I wish..." She shook her head. "Maybe one day," she said instead, with a little smile.

He kissed her back, feeling overwhelmingly sad that this was likely the last time he'd kiss her. She'd taught him so much- how to relax (a little), how to really enjoy being with someone so different from himself, and even how to laugh at himself- and it felt awful to be leaving her when he felt he hadn't done nearly that much for her.

"Yes, maybe," he said, because he hoped so. He hoped she didn't wait around for him, though, because she deserved so much more. He stood slowly, feeling a little awkward, and opened and closed his mouth several times. Let me know if I can do anything for you, and Maybe we can be friends just sounded awful, even in his head, so he settled for dropping another kiss on her forehead. "I'll let myself out. Take care of yourself, Hestia."

Percy stood and Hestia watched him. He seemed on the verge of saying something else, but decided against it.

"You too, Percy," Hestia said quietly, wanting to pull him back for one last hug, to try and memorize the feel of his body against hers, that distinctly Percy smell of ink and peppermint.

She didn't let herself cry until he was gone.
