Percy sent an owl at half past five saying he'd not be able to come pick her up for her special birthday dinner and he'd have to meet her at the restaurant. Hestia'd been a bit disappointed, but she'd smoothed down her new cranberry-coloured dress and made her way to the posh Muggle place.
She sat at the table drinking water for thirty minutes, at which point she switched to wine. She quickly ate all the rolls at her table and ended up having to order a small salad to tide her over until Percy arrived. She hoped he wouldn't be too upset.
After an hour and thirty minutes, she was blinking tears out of her eyes, trying not to overhear the hushed whispering of the waitstaff. Finally, her waiter came over.
"I'm very sorry, ma'am, but we're just too busy. It's a Friday night and -"
Hestia cut off his apologetic remarks with a nod. "I understand," she said, fishing a few Muggle notes out of her purse and placing them on the table. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
Another waiter appeared with a small box. "The gentleman had arranged for this to be served after the meal," he said quietly. Hestia took the box with slightly shaking hands and exited as quickly as she could.
She'd barely made it into the smelly alleyway next to the restaurant when she began to sob. She opened the box to find a beautiful cake with the inscription "Happy Birthday, Love" on it. It was the last straw. She threw it to the ground and stomped on it until it was a sticky mess on the pavement and her shoes.
