Date: 5 July 1999 | Afternoon
Characters: Lucius Malfoy, open.
Location: Diagon Alley
Status: Public
Summary: Lucius contemplates on his shop.
Completion: Incomplete

His hopes for opening his shop by January had been the work of an optimistic fool. Lucius no longer doubted that. All of the problems that came with opening his own shop dashed those dreams immediately. Instead he had to deal with endless amounts of paperwork in order to avoid violating his probation through "shady dealings." He had no clue what a crook his supplier was when he decided to work with him. At least, that was what that paperwork proclaimed, and there was plenty evidence of it since the bastard ripped him off as well, not delivering his supplies on time (and thus leaving him with nothing to open the shop with).

Fortunately, his perseverance in filling out the paperwork with his loop-hole maneuvering provided him with enough leverage to get through the Ministry's binds. However, Lucius knew he still had much more work ahead of him.

Lucius observed the inside of the shop with a Lumos spell from his wand (that still felt unfamiliar in his hand after the loss of his first). Filled with cobwebs and dust, it looked even worse than Malfoy Manor's dungeon. Perhaps its old function had been to house spiders, or to amuse children for Halloween, for it certainly looked nothing like the rest of the shops of Diagon Alley, all very respectable establishments. The small room was entirely barren aside from a counter protruding from the side wall and a few shelves. He cursed his associate under his breath before he ended the spell and exited the building.

He looked on the empty shop in the middle of Diagon Alley with a look that was somewhere between disgust and some twisted sense of pride. It was certainly not the best-looking shop it could be. Still Lucius felt that pride in the fact that he would be the one to turn that ugly rock into a sparkling diamond. The shop he looked at was rather small; it looked like it had been owned by some of the poorest wizards and witches who dared to open a shop in Diagon Alley. It looked like the old owner's sign had been torn down haphazardly, leaving some bits of paper whipping in the breeze. Definitely not attractive. If only there had been better choices in the neighborhood.

On the other hand, it suited his purposes and gave off an air of quaint hospitality. If he managed to make the shop look nicer while maintaining that home-like air, Lucius might be able to attract some families in a temperament similar to the Weasleys. Not likely to appeal to the Weasleys their selves, since most of them -- if not all of them -- despised him (with good reason).

Lucius honestly hoped he might be able to open the shop within the next few months. He definitely wanted it open before December, which seemed like the most realistic goal with how the Ministry was trying to stop him. It would be a nice gift if he could get it open before Narcissa's birthday; it would take a lot off of his mind. He needed to do what he could with the Ministry, or perhaps spread "rumors" of the shop opening before it did. That sounded like an excellent idea. And he had just the person in mind for the job. But for now, just a bit of leisurely shopping.
