Penny stretched lazily as the light coming in through the crack in the curtains woke her up. She breathed in deeply and realised that her nose and throat felt clear. The last of her flu was finally gone. Penny thought about getting up but instead snuggled further down under the covers and enjoyed a few more minutes of warmth before her bladder forced her to get up.
It was a bitter cold morning and Penny soon went back for her dressing gown and slippers. She did think about getting back into bed but instead Penny made herself a cup of tea. She walked slowly from room to room looking out of the windows at the snow. Living in Cornwall she had rarely seen snow when she was little and loved to see it now. Hogsmeade looked so beautiful, but she knew how cold it would be if she actually went out in it.
Penny looked at the clock on the living room. If she was going to work today she really should get dressed. But Madam Scrivenshaft had told her to take all the time off she wanted to recover from her flu. No one would know that she was really well enough to work. Part of Penny (the sensible responsible part) protested at this but she ignored it. She sent a quick owl to let Madam Scrivenshaft know she would be taking one more day off and then changed into clean pyjamas, and her fluffy pink bed socks.
Penny filled the kettle back up in order to make a whole pot of tea. She set it to boil and brought her duvet into the living room. She would have a sofa day and do nothing but read books, drink tea and eat biscuits. If she was feeling really energetic she might even take a bubble bath later on.
Once she had settled under the duvet with a selection of books, her pot of tea and chocolate digestives at her side, Penny found she couldn’t settle. The quill and rolls of parchment sitting on the mantelpiece kept drawing her attention. She really should be writing letters. She owed her neglected friends an owl at least to explain why she hadn't been around recently. She really should arrange an appointment with the Ministry of Magic's Human Resource department to enquire about any openings. And she definitely should be asking if there was any news of her missing family. She got up from under her duvet and picked up the parchment and quill. Penny walked over to the wooden chest that sat against one wall and popped them inside. Out of sight, out of mind.
Penny knew that acting like a hermit wasn't helping anything. She knew that her problems would still be there waiting. But she wasn’t ready to change today.
Now which book should she start with? She picked up a well worn novel, it's cover a little dog eared despite the care Penny took of all her books. She opened the book and began to smile, giving herself over to the imaginary world it offered.
"There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. . ."
