Date: 5 April Characters: Susan Bones, Cormac McLaggen Location: A fancy London restaurant Status: Private Summary: Cormac and Susan share an evening together Completion: Complete
Everything had been perfect, Cormac reflected after they ordered their dessert. He wanted desperately to floo Dougal and tell him he couldn't come, he wouldn't go to Belgium. But as much as he cared for Susan, he couldn't abandon his baby sister to an abusive husband.
"It truly has," Cormac said with a sigh, reaching out to take her hand. "Susan, there's something I need to tell you. I'm going to be going to Belgium tomorrow and I don't know when I'll be coming back."
Susan leant forward, clasping Cormac's hand in her own and smiling up at him. They'd gotten to know each other so much better over the last few months, and she could tell that something was wrong, although Cormac surprised her with his announcement. She sat up a little straighter, her lips pressed together, just trying to work out what he meant.
"But...but you can't go to Belgium. Not indefinitely." Her brain tried to keep up. Cormac was leaving? Leaving her? Leaving Britain? What had she done wrong to drive him so far away. "How long have you been...? Why are you...? When will you...?" She bit her lip to stop from talking, staring hopelessly at Cormac, desperate for him to explain. "Everything just...I'm a Hit Witch now. You can't leave."
"I wish I didn't have to, love," Cormac said. "Honestly. I want to stay here with you. You make me so happy, Susan. More than I deserve. But I have to go. It's my sister Clara. Dougal thinks her husband's hitting her." He paused to gather his thoughts for a moment. "I can't stay here and pretend that everything's going to be alright when she's terrified. Please tell me you understand that."
Susan was all ready to shout. Didn't want to go...if Cormac didn't want to go then he shouldn't! And if he wanted to stay with her so much, he should damn well stay here! Her protestations fell when she heard his explanation, and her face fell.
"Of course," she said, defeatedly. "Helga...Cormac, that's awful. And I...I understand." She squeezed her eyes together in an effort not to cry, pursed her lips and then said "If he's hurting her, then you need to see justice through. That's why I...I'm..." She waved her hand and tried to get control, but as she said "Hit Witch" she burst into tears despite her best efforts. "I'm sorry," she gasped. "I just thought...I didn't..."
