Neville laughed. Merlin, he enjoyed being around her. He felt comfortable and good. He felt like himself and he felt appreciated for it. He liked it, like it a lot.
"Ah, that's what that noise was. I thought it was a lorry rumbling nearby," he teased her.
Neville was careful not to shake off his coat and get the floor all wet since he couldn't use his wand to clean up. He hung it from the hook set into the strip of wall between the windows and took Pansy's to hang hers too, careful that the insides weren't touching the wet outside. He propped the umbrella underneath. "I like that jumper, is it new?" He thought she looked good in black with her dark hair. Neville was wearing black denims -- that Dean had suggested when he asked about what Muggle's considered nicer casual -- with an untucked camel coloured Muggle turtleneck jumper in a really soft wool.
The server appeared and asked about drinks. Neville almost messed up when he started to order pumpkin juice but caught himself in time and asked for a lemonade instead. He also asked what was smelling so good and the server gave the air a small sniff before explaining it was that smell was chicken faitas and showed him a photo in the menu.
She nodded. "My aunt gave it to me. Among other things," she smiled. She reached her hand out and touched the soft wool of Neville's jumper, fingering the material between her fingers. "I like that too," she said softly. "Goes nicely with your eyes."
When the server arrived, Pansy ordered a cup of tea and a water, nodding when he explained the fajitas. "Smells wonderful." The server winked at her, and Pansy raised an eyebrow at him, reaching across the table for Neville's hand.
"I think I'm going to have those fajita things. They smell too good to pass up. They make them for two, if you're interested too, Pansy." Chicken had been pretty hard to come by in Hogsmeade and it really did smell great.
"I was wondering if you'd like to go that Cultural Centre Benefit with me on the 16th? I've donated something for Fleur's silent auction and I'd like to go. I should warn you that Ginny might be there, so I would understand if you weren't comfortable going with me. It's a good cause though and there'll be nice music and dancing." He'd had a nice chat with Fleur when he'd dropped off the Longbottom's Landscapes voucher a couple weeks ago. Fleur hadn't been sure what to tell him except that she did not want him to feel excluded.
Pansy's eyebrows shot up, had Neville really just asked her to a benefit? "I'd love to go, Neville." She bit her lip, wondering if the Weasleys would be angry to see her with Neville, considering Ginny.
George had always been pleasant, and Ron was rather nice, too. That didn't mean things would be the same now, though. "Do you think it might upset the Weasleys? I don't plan to not go with you because of that, mind you. But I don't want to make anyone angry or upset, either." Pansy wasn't sure how close Neville had been with Ginny's family, but assumed their break up hadn't gone over well.
The server came back with their drinks and Neville ordered the chicken fajitas for two.
"I asked Fleur what she thought. She isn't sure how Mr. and Mrs. Weasley might react, but she wasn't sure if they would attend either. She wasn't even sure if Ginny would be there. I'm not really worried about Ron, George or Percy. Bill's always a little scary and Charlie seems mostly oblivious." Neville squeezed Pansy's hand. "I don't think anyone expected us not to date other people eventually," he told her truthfully.
"I don't want to hurt Ginny any more than I have. She is my friend even if she isn't really interested in being friends any more. I can't really blame her for that, considering I wasn't any good at helping her get better, only at hiding the problems. More than that, Pansy, I don't want to feel like I have to hide you. That isn't fair to you. That isn't fair to us. I really enjoy your company. I especially enjoy dancing with you. I think we can be sensitive to the Ginny's feelings and those of the Weasleys and still enjoy ourselves. Don't you? If it looks like it's not working, then we'll leave early and visit Belladonna or something instead." Neville didn't want to make a big deal out of it because there were lots of Weasleys and he wasn't going to hide from them.
She nodded, mostly in agreement with him. "I'm sure Ginny would take things better then Draco has at any rate," she said as their drinks arrived.
"I think that's fine, Neville, really. I'm not worried for my sake, but for yours." She mixed her tea, careful to keep the long sleeves of her jumper out of the cup.

"Can I ask you a frank question, Neville?"
Reply
He looked at her curiously, "Sure, Pansy. Always. What is it?"
