Date: February 14, 1999 Characters: Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood Location: Hogwarts Status: Private Summary: Luna runs into Harry on her way into the library and gets sidetracked. Completion: Complete
Less than twenty-four hours before his Potions NEWT, and Harry was feeling the pressure. If there was one thing that was good about it, it was that he didn't have the time to think (excessively) about Hermione, and whether she'd got his note.
He'd needed some things in the library, to check against his notes, but he hadn't been able to find them in the one at home and had gone to Hogwarts to use it. It was so odd that after Friday, he'd not be able to use it again, or any of the castle. He was glad that the painting he'd commissioned had come in today -- he'd been running out of time.
Notes in hand, he left the library, opening the door and nearly running smack into Luna. "Sorry," he said. "Alright? I was looking down and didn't realise. Erm, hi. I'm alright, really. Just checking some things for Potions. How are you?" Noting that she seemed to be alright, he smiled.
"Oh, I'm lovely," she answered lightly, smiling vaguely. She stepped to the side so that she wasn't in front of the door anymore and wondered if he was quite busy. She was happy she'd run into him, it'd be summer before they could see each other regularly. Maybe he'd want to take a walk or something. "Did you find what you were looking for? Is your Potions NEWT tomorrow?"
"That's good," he said honestly, glad she was doing alright. "You look it. Like you feel lovely, I s'pose." He wouldn't see her as much after Friday, he realised. "Yeah; it's tomorrow, all day. I'm finished in the library, though. I needed to fill in a hole in my notes." He gestured back toward the door. "Were you on you way in, or?"
She contemplated the door and shifted her bag on her shoulders. "Well, yes, I was, but I can easily change directions. Are you up for a walk, perhaps? Or, where were you headed?"
"No, I probably don't," he agreed, then looked at her with a small smile, "but you're the only person I've told, Luna, and I think maybe it's good to hear it from you, too. I've been sort of inside my own head for the last week, and it's been kind of a crazy place." He smiled crookedly. "I guess there is no easy fix. And I've about given up on wondering if this thing, with me and her, was just a fluke. It's not, and if it were I think that'd be about the worst thing." It felt real to him, the way nothing else ever had. "I can't back away from it."
"Seriously?" Harry paused for a second when Luna told him that Greg was had her feeling distracted all weekend. That was Greg Goyle. He knew they were friends; anyone who'd spent any time in the castle the last few months saw them together at least a couple times, talking or whatever. But snogging? Harry could honestly say he'd never pictured Goyle snogging anyone, much less Luna. They seemed so different, although Goyle did seem much less like he'd used to be. Gentler, Harry supposed. Of

Luna smiled back. "Thank you for telling me and getting out of your head, then. It's easy to get very confused that way. I'm glad you feel this way, though- and if it feels right to you, there's really only one thing to do about it."
Harry looked a little concerned, and she knew that Greg and Harry had a bit of a colorful history. She was touched by his furrowed brow rather than offended, and she didn't necessarily blame him. One couldn't just expect these kinds of things.
Except, well, she had had suspicions about Harry and Hermione for a while. But that was different. Luna had a lot of suspicions.
"Yes, he does," Luna said serenely, nodding. "He... gets me, for lack of a better word. I don't think he thinks he does, but he does. And I get him."
"Thanks for listening," he said sincerely. Luna always seemed to make complicated things seem less complicated, even just for a little while. His mind felt clearer just from getting it out.
Harry listened to Luna as she said that Greg got her. She wasn't the sort to say something was true if she didn't really feel it inside, so he had to take what she said at face value. "I think that's pretty hard to find," he mused, "I mean, I don't have a lot of experience with it or anything, but it seems like getting each other would be rare."
Luna just shrugged, letting go of his arm with a slight smile. "I like to."
She hummed in agreement with him. "I think so too. Until recently, it was pretty rare for me to even find someone who wanted to try to get me, which I value just as much. You know I don't have much experience with it either, but it feels good. And right. Which is all I can really ask for- the rest of it is a bonus, just makes it more special," she said, knowing that she was being a little vague. But Harry probably didn't need to hear about Greg's bonuses, like his warm skin and broad shoulders and rumbling laugh or the way he let his guard down around her. She felt possessive of these things, too, inexplicably, so she hoped he understood.
