Date: February 12, 1999 Characters: Luna Lovegood, various others Location: Student housing Status: Public-ish Summary: Luna spreads post (or mid)-NEWT cheer and coping strategies. Completion: Incomplete
Seamus was taking the couch in their sitting room through a slew of different colors and fabrics (his bit of practical Transfiguration study for the day) when he heard the lion roar outside. As he was closest to it, he moved to get the door rather than yell for whichever of his mates might be around. When he opened the door, he saw Luna standing there with a bag, and grinned. He smelled baked goods, too -- an added bonus.
"Pretty Luna," he said, quite happy to see her. He was in the middle of a whirlwind two weeks, and while it was a good distraction in some ways, breaks in the monotony of revising were definitely welcome. Especially surprise ones. "Get in here." He put an arm around her shoulders and squeezed. "This is a surprise, to be sure, but it's lovely to see you. I'll also add that you smell good enough to eat." He winked.
Seamus was the one to open the door, and Luna beamed up at him when he greeted her by calling her pretty. She probably blushed, but that was to be expected- really only her Daddy said things like that, and sometimes Greg implied them. She squeezed him back happily with an arm around his waist and stepped inside.
"Seamus! You can't eat me," she said, laughing as he closed the door behind her. "I know it's a surprise. I won't stay long if you're busy, but I wanted to bring some biscuits and say hello. How is the revising going?"
She reached into her bag as she talked, pulling out a brown paper bag she'd filled with sweets. "These all have a bit of ginkgo biloba in them- they're great for concentration and memorization."
"And why not?" Seamus asked, sounding affronted. "If that's the case, well then you shouldn't go around smelling like biscuits. Though I reckon it makes sense now, seeing as you've brought some in that little bag o' yours."
He led her inside. "The others are around somewhere, I figure. We're rarely too far from home when there's NEWTs to study for. It's going well, I reckon. I've only one exam left and it's not until Wednesday, so I'm not in panic mode as yet. Luckily for you."
Gesturing to the sofa, he took the bag from Luna. "Aye; well, this ginko-whatever sounds tasty. Thanks, Luna. Whenever it is you take your own NEWTs, I might have to try my hand at baking. Return the favor. Won't be pretty, but it's the thought that counts, right?"
Luna shook her head reasonably. "I couldn't very well have showered before I came over- then the biscuits would have cooled. So I'm sorry if I smell like biscuits, but you'll just have to restrain yourself. Maybe it'll help to eat one," she finished, teasing.
"Oh, I do hope to see them, but I'll understand if they're busy," she grinned faintly and followed him in, taking off her cloak. "Lucky for me. How have your other exams gone, then?"
She sat down when he invited her to the sofa. "You're welcome. And that would be delightful, even if they weren't pretty."
Luna headed towards Pansy's house- two doors down, Neville had said- with her bag a little lighter and a big smile on her face. She had liked the biscuits Pansy had sent her over the holidays, so she figured she could return the favor. It was a bit different from owling them, she knew, but it was even more personal to deliver them in person.
It didn't take her long at all to reach Pansy's door, and she knocked a few times- loudly, in case the occupants were wrapped up in their books.
Pansy ran to the front door, surprised to see Luna standing on the other side. "Hello, Luna. What a pleasant surprise. Please, come in," she smiled, holding the door open for the other girl.
"Hogsmeade weekend? Or is it a home weekend for you? I regret that I'm not sure what the schedule is."
"Thank you," Luna smiled serenely, entering when Pansy directed her to. "How are you?"
"It's a home weekend. There's no reason for you to know the seventh years' schedule, so I'd not worry about it. I got to baking this morning, so I thought you might like some biscuits- do you have revising left to do?" she held up a little brown bag she'd tied with a pink ribbon for Pansy. "They're enhanced with ginkgo biloba for memory and concentration, just in case. But they taste good if not."
"I'm quite well, thank you." She took the little bag, admiring the pink ribbon she'd attached. "You're so sweet, Luna, thank you." Pansy was surprised by the random act of kindness, but supposed if she was hanging out with people outside her house, she should learn to accept it. Not that there weren't Slytherin's who were friendly. It was quite surprising, though, that someone would come out of their way to see her, and bring treats, too.
"That's wonderful. I have two exams to go, so these will be very helpful." She motioned to the couch, sitting down and patting the spot next to her. "May I get you some tea, Luna?"
The walk to Greg's house from Pansy's was a bit longer, but Luna enjoyed being outside and found a sizable pebble to kick around on her way over. It wasn't too cold for Luna's taste, and the mi-dafternoon was quiet- probably quieter than usual. The pebble went rogue at one point, leading her right into Greg's backyard. She laughed a bit to herself and abandoned it, hurrying around to the front of the house so she could knock on the door.
She shifted her bag and smiled to herself, hoping Greg would be home- and appreciate the surprise. It'd be nice to see Michael and Draco, and she wouldn't even mind just leaving the biscuits on the step if she had to, but it'd be nice to see Greg's smile and maybe give him a hug and some more encouragement.
Michael had Potions notes, two Arithmancy charts, his Transfiguration book, and a bit of Runes translation scattered on the table in the living room. He'd made it through Charms and DADA relatively unscathed, but the thought of four more exams to get through was making him a bit nervous.
He'd just decided to roll up the Arithmancy and concentrate on Potions when he heard someone at the door.
"Luna! Come in! I hadn't realized it was a home weekend." He waved a hand at his piles of books. "I think I've been a bit preoccupied lately."
"Did you come to see Greg? I think he's upstairs."
"Thanks, Michael!" Luna said, smiling again. Her cheeks were starting to hurt from all the smiling. It had been a good idea to make all of these impulsive visits, she decided. She came in when he directed her to, her cloak slung over her arm- she hadn't felt like taking it off and putting it on again. She looked over at the table when he said he'd been preoccupied.
"It looks like it," she said, and then shook her head slightly when he asked if she came to see Greg. She brightened, though, when Michael said he might be there. "I came to see whoever was home. I brought treats for the revising; some biscuits and muffins. You're not revising too hard, are you?"
Michael perked up at the mention of food. They'd been living off the food his mother and sister had made over hols, but most of the treats had long since been eaten.
"Here, let me take your cloak, and you can put the treats in the kitchen. I'm honestly not sure if Greg and Malfoy are here or not." He shrugged. "We've all been more concerned with revising than socializing lately."
Luna left Greg's- after a few sweet goodnight kisses- to find that the sky had grown nearly completely dark. She smiled at this, wrapping her arms around herself and enjoying the cold air on her cheeks, wanting to walk for a few minutes until she Apparated home. She hadn't planned the day going like this at all- in fact, she still had a package of sweets she'd intended to deliver to Grimmauld Place in her bag. She'd have to owl it to them when she got home.
Instead of just a few quick deliveries, the day had turned out beautiful- from catching the three boys at home at the same time, to bonding a bit with Pansy over tea- and then Greg. She was still a little in awe over it all... that he could look at her like that; simultaneously excited and nervous and in awe, a mirror of her own feelings. Before this year, she had felt the girls in her dorm were so silly when they got crushes, and while she still couldn't relate entirely, she could identify with why they had giggled so much. But it just felt right with Greg. And she already
