She giggled at him. At him, not with him. He sighed, but smiled. At least he could make her laugh. That was always a good sign.

Percy gave her words some thought, thinking they were important enough to mull over for a moment before answering. "That's one way of looking at it, I suppose." It actually made him feel a little uncomfortable, he realized. Was he just fulfilling obligations to himself? Is that what he'd been doing the last several years? He frowned a bit.

"So, what is it that you'd like to do this year? Maybe we can talk in daydreams instead of resolutions," he said, finally.

"All theoretical? Well I'd love to take that holiday to the beach. Stand up for myself a bit more. Figure out something to do for the kids at the hospital. The ones who've got no family left, or the family they have don't want them. Something that'll make them feel loved." Hestia shrugged and looked at Percy. "It's all daydreams, like you said. What about you, Perce?"

"Those don't sound like unattainable daydreams," Percy said, thinking it over. They sounded like lovely goals to have, really, and he found himself admiring her for them.

"Well," he pursed his lips. "I'd like to spend a lot more time with my family. I'm still working on making sure Mrs. Tonks is happy she gave me a second chance and hired me. And, er, a few weeks ago I'd been thinking I'd try to be more social, but I'm getting a head start on that already, I think."

"Yeah, well I can be really lazy sometimes," Hestia said, "yours don't sound much like daydreams, either. I mean you're already doing them. But you reminded me of something I really need to do. I need to go visit Mrs. Tonks and little Teddy. I keep putting it off because I'm nervous, but I shouldn't. They're all that are left of Dora, other than the memories. And I know Dora would have wanted me to help look after Teddy," she said quietly. "I feel like I'm letting her down."

Percy frowned a little. "You were good friends with ... Dora?" he asked. He should have known, really. He remembered vaguely that that was how Charlie and Hestia knew each other in the first place.

"I think Mrs. Tonks would probably appreciate the company and the help with Teddy," Percy said, nodding decisively. His boss didn't seem to quite get enough sleep most nights, but it really wasn't any of Percy's business. Children were time-consuming, though, he knew after watching his mum have several of them- and Mrs. Tonks had a full time job, too.

"Yeah. Not as close as I would have liked, but there's not much I can do about it now," Hestia said sadly.

"That's good to hear. I think I'll owl her later in the week," Hestia decided. She leaned against Percy, resting her head on his shoulder.

Percy frowned for her, understanding that regret all too well.

"I think she'd like that," he repeated, distracted from her head on his shoulder. He leaned over a bit to make it comfier for her, her hair tickling the side of his face. They were quiet then, falling into one of their lapses in conversation that happened often and were more comfortable than anything. He appreciated that she didn't want to fill the air between them with useless chatter, and it was really quite nice with her snuggled up to his side like this.

A few stray fireworks were set off, and people started counting down. Two children ran by with miniature fireworks in their hands, which made Percy flinch, but no one else seemed to be concerned. It must be a Muggle thing.

He grinned to himself and counted with the crowd as they counted down from fifteen seconds.

Percy adjusted himself so she was more comfortable, and she smiled. They stayed like that in comfortable silence for a few minutes until the crowd began to count down. She heard Percy begin to count and lifted her head to look at him, counting along as well. When it was midnight, Hestia saw the sky explode with light, reflected in Percy's glasses.

Be brave, Hestia told herself. And she leaned over and kissed him gently.

As it happened, Percy didn't need to make the decision of lips versus cheek. Hestia made it for him. And her lips were quite nice indeed.

Percy had another moment of indecision- to accept her peck and move on, celebrating with the Muggles and eventually take her home, or to return the kiss how he felt appropriate. There was only one way to ring in the New Year, though, and Percy never did things halfway.

He reached up, cupping the back of her neck softly, and kissed her thoroughly. He increased the pressure on her lips a tad, and when she seemed to approve, he tilted his head and accidentally bumped her nose, but traced the seam of her lips with his tongue. He knew he'd made the right decision- her lips were soft and plump, and quite inviting.

There was a moment where Hestia's heart was racing and she thought she'd blown it. But then Percy was kissing her, really kissing her. And damn, he knew how to kiss. That was a very pleasant surprise. She stroked his hair gently, and when his tongue was pressing against her lips she shivered slightly and opened her mouth to let him in.

Percy deepened the kiss, feeling her shiver minutely. He felt her fingers in his hair and sighed slightly before pulling away. He returned to her lips quickly for another peck, then backed away again. It would be too easy to continue kissing her like this, but Percy did want to be a gentleman. Part of him was screaming that it was too fast, but the other part was amazed that someone so kind, funny, and... soft, could want the likes of him- all proper, organized, angular.

But he smiled tentatively, anyway, oblivious to the sounds of the fireworks exploding and the people cheering. He dragged his eyes from her lips to her own eyes. "Happy new year?"

All too soon, Percy was pulling away and taking his delightful tongue with him. Hestia was a bit disappointed, but he probably didn't want to rush things. It was better to go slow, Hestia decided, brushing his hair off his forehead gently. After all, she had a horrible track record and she gathered his wasn't much better.

"Very happy new year," Hestia said with a smile.
