The dress was too short. Why she let her brother's girlfriend talk her into it was a mystery, but she knew it was too late to do anything about it. She just hoped she didn't look like a slag in bright red with her hair down and straight, the neck of the dress far more revealing than she was used to.

They arrived at the restaurant, and Eloise walked in ahead of Ernie. She was nervous at first, but this was Ernie not some random bloke who would make her feel uncomfortable.

"Thanks," she smiled. "It smells wonderful, and I'm starving," she said, feeling stupid afterwards. She was in a pretty dress, actually wearing makeup, and she had to talk about her appetite. It didn't seem very feminine.

As they walked through the door, Ernie offered to take her coat for her and handed it along with his own to the host before he seated them. Immediately, when he turned to follow the Eloise to the table, his heart jumped into his throat.

He had never seen her look so stunning - not even at the ball. Her dress complimented her complexion just so and set of the pink in her cheeks, which he assumed was there from the cold. And as they sat down, Ernie pulled out from his pocket, a single long-stemmed rose and handed it to her.

"Have anything you like," said Ernie smiling. "My treat. It is your birthday, after all. Well, a couple days late, but still."

She blushed when she took off her coat, hopefully she didn't look ridiculous.

"Oh, thank you. It's lovely," she said, sniffing the rose. She picked up the menu and smiled. "You don't have to, but who am I to refuse a gentlemanly offer?" There, that was flirty, wasn't it? Merlin, she was pants at this. She could flirt if she wasn't thinking about it, just not when she wanted to. She would just need to remember this was Ernie, and he actually liked her for her, not because she was some tall leggy flirt.

"So, how was your Christmas?"

Ernie picked up the menu and played with the placement of his tie as he sat down and placed his napkin in his lap. It was a fancy place, but he didn't feel that it was too expensive. At least not for this. It was an important night and he'd set aside enough money to treat himself and Eloise for the evening.

He smiled at her flirtatiousness and commended himself that he hadn't scared her off yet. Then he tried to convince himself that this wasn't any different from any other time they spent together. Just because he suddenly was having midnight fantasies that involved one of his closest friends didn't mean that they couldn't hang out together or even act normal when alone at dinner.

"My Christmas was happy. It was good to see my parents and other family. I didn't stay too long, though. I've been working at the Ministry this week, trying to get a little extra in before the end of N.E.W.T.s so I can make a good impression. Figure every little bit helps when applying to work there."

"What about you? How have you been?"

Ernie, always the gentleman, helped Eloise back on with her coat and handed her a mint from the tray, then took one for himself after he'd wrapped up for the weather.

"Shall we?" he asked, opening the door for her.

Once out in the street, Ernie could see her relax in the fresh air, though she looked a bit cold. He didn't want to stay outside too long if she was already feeling cold, but he was enjoying the air.

"How are things going with Magical Equality?" he asked. Eloise certainly had an interesting job and he was curious about the details.

"Well, I haven't actually started yet. And I'm just volunteering. I'm excited about it, though. I sent Fleur a list of books I want the book club to try reading, so once she has a chance to look it over she'll get back to me."

They headed towards a club that looked rather crowded, but didn't have people waiting outside they didn't want to be there, it seemed. Throngs of people were huddled together, smoking muggle cigarettes and laughing. "Should we give it a shot?" she asked.

"I'm sure it will go swimmingly. If anyone can pull off something like that, it's you," Ernie said.

They made their way through a large group of people and went in through the door into the dark and flashing lights and music pumping.

"Shall I get us a drink?" he asked Eloise as they checked their coats. He knew he should ask before they stepped onto the dance floor with the loud music all around.

"I don't know about that, but I hope so anyway. Any progress on the Auror front?"

She shrugged off her coat and nodded, handing it to the attendant. "Sure, I'll just have whatever you're having," she said, a little overwhelmed but the number of people.

The music was familiar, despite her inability to place it. As Ernie got them drinks, she bopped around a little, the wine having set in and making her a little looser.
